Just $5, hurrah! Home Depot folks were marking down these flowering plants just as dd#2 was passing through the garden area. Sales person would apply the clearance price tag and hand over each plant to an eagerly waiting customer. A line was forming of customers noticing these price reductions and hurrying over to get a beautiful plant or more for themselves. Dd#2 grows Mandevilla at home (west side of Houston) and thought this plant would be great in the center of my oval garden where marigolds planted by dd#1 already grow around the perimeter. She intends to plant it for me tomorrow.
Are any of you still planting flowers like Mandevilla, or is it getting too hot for that?

HappyHerself : Is that what that's called?? I just put one in a hanging planter yesterday! I have always had red, but this year I have one that looks exactly like yours! They do great on my sunny patio fireplace.
Is this sale here or in Louisiana?
muffy : Oops! I asked dd#2 and she said it was not Home Depot -- it was at a Walmart here in Louisiana near the airport. This morning she had taken her sister, dd#1, to the airport and was picking up groceries for herself on her way back here. She noticed the plant markdowns in progress and managed to get this one for me.

HappyHerself : That is a beautiful Mandevilla at a great price. I am not planting anything else this year, simply maintaining. It's too hot to spend much time working in the yard.

Kittle : Each year I resolve to keep a simple summer garden, maybe just okra. But each year I don't follow through with that. Like you said, summer is too hot -- and humid! This year, though, dd#1 weeded my oval garden and planted cheerful marigolds around the inside edge, and dd#2 will plant this beautiful Mandevilla. My garden will be quite nice despite summer's heat. I'll have to dead head the marigolds now and then but I think I can do that.
HappyHerself : That's my DH favorite and they grow great in this weather. We have about 6 in pots out back all different colors.

HappyHerself : I don't buy those any more. Super picky plant….hard to grow. Its cousin, Diplandia is much easier and hearty. They are beautiful tho, they just don't last.

I asked, don't I need a support for them to grow on? She said she lets hers "grow wild," just spreading on the ground. She cuts them back when they spread too far. I hadn't heard of Diplandia before you mentioned it; I'll look into that, too, and maybe replace the Mandevilla with Diplandia if this Mandevilla isn't happy among my marigolds.

HappyHerself : They are so pretty. I was very drawn to them. Bought several and just struck out. Soil may be a factor. There are things that I just can't grow in the soil here. I have a lot of potted stuff. Pots allow more control. You can move them around if a plant isn't thriving in one location to try another. Certain things just don't grow well. But we just try more stuff lol.« Back to Chat
