Wow, I just finished my last day of PEAK season and I was driving through the storms and getting to work while those were coming through. Does anyone in Houston have tornado sirens here? How are people supposed to even know? We got an alert 4 minutes after it was over. (not helpful when you need to evacuate employees to a safe area)

No sirens 🤬. I thought that was so strange when we moved here- esp for the night tornadoes. I can't tell you how many times the sirens would go off at night in Ohio waking us up. THAT saves lives

Houston used to have an air raid siren system, which was not for tornadoes, but it was deemed too expensive to maintain and they were dismantled and mostly sold as scrap.

Houston is not really, or at least historically, considered part of tornado alley. Perhaps that has changed. I feel like phone alerts might be the way to reach the most people.

Jeepinbear : I agree that the Houston area does get a lot of tornados; my point was that it is not "considered" part of tornado alley, or at least wasn't historically. Harris County alone is bigger than the state of Rhode Island, and when you add in the surrounding counties, the area is nearly the size of the state of Massachusetts. The effective range of a tornado siren is about 1 square mile; Harris County would need almost 2000 sirens. Doable - yes. But not practical or taking advantage of modern technology, using cell phone towers to issue alerts to all cell phones contacting that tower.

Wow! You can really see the wind shift directions on that video. That camera didn't even shake! Kudos to whoever anchored it so firmly!
