FEMA could soon make some changes to flood mapping. Here's the rundown on six recommendations made by a technical group. If implemented, they should reduce present and future flood damage by increasing flood-risk transparency and accuracy.

So is this another new change in flood plain definitions? Bc I thought they just last year did away with flood plain risks and rates based on history of an area. And the " new plan" was to spread the risk and higher rates among those who didn't flood so that those who have flooded don't have the highest insurance rates?

So basically if your already in a flood plain, look at the fancy word salad changes to take more liability off the table for the developers and folks who know they are in a flood plain and don't pay or have flood insurance and just toss in the generic climate change to avoid the overall responsibility of knowing your in a flood prone area where it will flood again.

You are correct. This won't affect your rates. At least not directly. The maps used to have TWO primary uses. The first was in flood insurance to help set rates. But as you pointed out, that is no longer the case. Your house now has its own individual risk rating that takes into account far more factors than which flood plain you are in. The second primary use is by flood plain managers. Among other things, they rule on building permits, fill requirements, and construction plans. The map recommendations will be valuable for them. I hope that clears up some of the confusion. This is a very complex system with lots of moving parts.

MissAmericanPie : Anytime any government entity claims they're making changes to current policies that will benefit we the people I am skeptical and curious how much its gonna cost us.
