Did the whole kitchen myself- prepped with Kilz Adhesion ( can ONLY be bought online.) Brushed and rolled 2 coats of Behr semi gloss enamel- did inside and outside the cabinets. Hubs bought new doors and drawers. Did it 3years ago and it's held up like a champ.

@Labslady : very nice...looks great! Foam rol.ers n flowers levels out the paint as good as spray! Awesome job!

Here's my latest project- the family room. The insets are 2 shades lighter than the kitchen cabinets and the lighter trim is a light grey( looks white but it's not)

And yes I did purposely sponge paint this room 20 years ago- when it was all the rage. Hubs still loves it and I had to really talk him into this project. Again 1-2 panels at a time - over half done

We paid someone to spray them away back. We didn't pay all that much, but it really hasn't held up with a toddler in the house. I have a lot to touch up.

@gigem09 : Your little guy is so cute! My DS used to ride his toy tractor around the house. The paint on every wall edge was chipped where he turned too soon. I was constantly touching up. What I wouldn't give to have those days back. Emoticon

@QueenB: Absolutely no way I would pay $9,000 to paint cabinets.

@Ray : I was going to tag you as I know you redid your whole kitchen and undertook a bigger project than us- didn't you actually move the cabinets around/ appliances around?

But yes thanks for the compliment. My Dad taught me the old way and I've just never became adept at the sprayer. Just can't get it even

Have you ever painted cabinets? I've never done much home improvement myself but I'm wondering….. would you prep and paint 34 kitchen cabinets, 20 drawers and an island, or would you pay a local company $9,000 to do it instead?

@QueenB : I would get a couple of bids from the company someone else used. That seems a little high to paint cabinets

Ive done it. Its not as big a deal as people make it out to be.
I did the ones in by bathroom recently, I just did a light sanding with a sanding sponge, wiped them down and then brushed on Behr cabinet and trim paint from Home Depot. The paint self levels and looks terrific. Sure, It doesn't look as perfect as a spray finish but too see the brush strokes you literally have be looking for them.
I plan to the same exact thing to my kitchen soon.

@Labslady : Yes I did. Took out all appliances and removed the countertops and put down 3/4 ply substrate for the granite. The granite I subbed out. Never did that b4 and did not wanna learn in my own kitchen.

If you paint them, use Heirloom Traditions paint. No sanding or priming needed...just clean them. It's expensive, but amazing stuff. That being said, I just had my entire house painted....all cabinets inside and out and tons of wood paneling....and it was $8500. Worth every penny.

I'm retired so I have the time, and I have the space and the tools. I've just never done it. I'm wondering how much of a pain it is. I sure could use the $9k to do other things that I know I can't do.

@QueenB : The sanding would be the killer for me. The guys I hired did not do it right so my paint is chipping. You may be in great shape to do this, but your kitchen will be out of commission for awhile. But you will do a great job I am sure.
I would definitely hire it out because I am not up to the task, bit even 15 years ago I hied it out.
