Searching for a good laptop for my son. Not looking for anything super fancy. I get lost in all the details. What do you see out there that would be a good buy?

Always check that it has more than ample storage. Buy the fastest processor you can afford.

That's what I've been told is #1.

Me, I want a 10 key but that isn't for everyone.

@ILoveReading : Costco has some good deals on laptops if you're a member.

@ILoveReading : We stick with HP. If he is a gamer, there might be certain things he would "need" for that. I think I got our last one at Costco.

He is in his 2nd year of college. He is a business major and his current computer needs to be replaced. He also likes to play games but some of the gaming laptops are well out of my price point limit.

@ILoveReading : you will want to look PAST all the bells and whistles on the laptop that you will buy. People tend to want fast processor, high RAM, big hard drive, etc...What you really want to know is does it have a good enough motherboard to handle all that horsepower.

Few years ago I bought a top of the line HP laptop for my wife and it burnt out dead after one year. I took it to my computer guru friend. He took it apart and to look and told me "your over a thousand dollar laptop with all this horsepower came with a cheapest cooling system and a $25 motherboard that could barely handle what were on it. It ran too hot and burnt out".

He told me to go with either Dell or Asus as they don't cut corner on motherboard like everyone else.

@Seann : I will keep that in mind as we shop. There are so many options it is hard to weed through them.

One advantage at Costco is Costco extends the warranty period.
The prices are up on computers this year tho.
