The older sibling and the lifeguard are not watching your little kid. If she had a problem it would not have been your son or the lifeguard who saved her. Also, Get your kid swim lessons!!!

@TEXASGIRLMAMMA : So so true!!! When my kids were little we went to the neighborhood pool every day in the summer. Over the years, saw a few rescues and NONE of them were by lifeguards. The lifeguards were completely oblivious until after some unrelated parent pulled the drowning kid out. 4951

TEXASGIRLMAMMA : I was a member then and never heard about that. I do recall a five-year-old boy or so drowning there around 25 years ago over a memorial day weekend. The pool was crowded and he slipped off one of those floating noodles and no one noticed. It can happen in seconds, too.

@floodlady : I am a friend with the mother. The father was suppose to be at the pool with the almost 5 year old and the 9 year old was in charge while the father was playing tennis. Unbelievable how stupid people can be. He was dead 20 minutes before the father showed up.
I had a discussion a party the night before saying someone was going to drown soon in Kingwood the lifeguards and the parents are not watching there kids. Next day bam it happened! Two older boys really never recovered from the trauma. My kids took so many swimming lessons I cannot imagine how much money I could have saved. My daughter at 2.5 years old could go off the diving board and get to the side of the pool no problem.

But that is just something that I believe is important. 4951

Weathergirl5 : I am not a good swimmer. I cannot tread water. My husband made a joke about me having two perfect flotation devices on my chest, yet I am not a swimmer. I love the water and I can swim across my pool, but I would not survive in open water. There were not public pools when I was little. I can't believe I am telling you this but when I was little I took a swimming class at the Y. All the moms laughed at me because I made a huge splash and stayed in one place. I was trying my best , but could not make it across the pool. I didn't even move. I am crying just thinking about it. We can help out children swim today'.

@muffy : I can't swim either. I almost drowned in a lake when I was about 12. I've been afraid of water since then . I can go on a cruise but I can't walk around the pool for fear of falling in 4951

TEXASGIRLMAMMA : Thank you! I've taken my grandson to the park and the pool and watched younger kids get bullied by young teens there by themselves! The lifeguards have music turned up so loud there's no way they could hear a small child yell for help! I fought against this for years at Sherwood Trails and Elm Grove pools. I even walked over and turned the radio down myself.

@luannski : I saw a television show once that claimed that drowning is usually silent. The head goes back to keep the nose above water, it's a maneuver lifeguards are taught to look for. Hardly anyone drowning screams out. 4951

Worked as a lifeguard all through HS and college at both public pools and private clubs. So many crazy stories. Anyone can drown in seconds. 4951

@TEXASGIRLMAMMA : Also to add…my son is 13 and there is no way I would put that responsibility on him to watch my 8 year old. He's busy with his friends… he likes to go to SWH for the basket ball goal in the water. My daughter met the girl you are talking about Monday and I've tried to keep an eye on her when I'm there, but she also isn't my child. Mine can swim great, but even so, I would not send her with my son who is also a great swimmer. 4951

@TEXASGIRLMAMMA : One of my children was a lifeguard several years ago. It was not uncommon for children to be waiting outside the entrance for the lifeguard to arrive and open the pool. It was also not uncommon for kids to spend all day, by themselves, some with lunch and some not....all summer long. Sadly times have changed. 4951

@BrunetteBarbie : Same thing on the beach. People go out without a jacket and they are watching half way their kids and have no idea what a rip tide is and then one goes out too far. Tragedy happens, 4951
