I called my son yesterday. My DH and DIL have the same birthdate. It is my DH's 65th. We will be visiting at this time so I thought we might have a combined party.
Nope, she saw this coming and insisted her birthday be celebrated separately! Oh and her sons birthday is on the 2nd and she won't let them combine them either. 4951

This could be because she wants to do something nice for her father in law or maybe she doesn't want to be forgotten and/or out-shined by the visiting patriarch of her husbands family. Hopefully she wouldn't mean anything by it but I would have to very very close with a person to want to do a joint celebration of my birthday... But then again, I'm still at the phase of my life where I celebrate my birthday for like 10 days leading up and like 10 days after so I may be considered a bit overboard at times... lol 4951

Is it that they want to go out separately for her birthday, maybe a special dinner, just the two of them? That wouldn't be an unreasonable request.

I also understsnd not wanting a combined party. Everyone gets blended in and glossed over, but after 25 or so, adult birthdays aren't the same as they used to be. She should be adult enough to go with the flow. Sounds like she's very young.

Have a combined party, then let them celebrate hers, then the child's however they want, separately. 4951

I guess it depends on what she wants to do for them. I wouldn't have a problem combining mine. 4951

Maybe she thinks her FIL is a ****. Without naming names there are more than a few people in my family I don't want to share a Birthday with, not because its an important event to me but more because I don't like them. 4951

She's 36 and a teacher. Sorry but from past experience everything is about her, I thought it was because I'm the step mom that the last time we were there I was snubbed. I guess not. 4951

Yea, adults should be mature enough to blend parties but kids need their own celebration. 4951

Yea- at 36 she should be over that.. we barely celebrate anymore- I just turned 60 2months ago and I don't remember what we did 🤣

I do remember a year or two having to put my foot down about Mother's Day- mainly when the kids were little. My FIL's Birthday was close to Mothers Day- but only fell on Mothers Day once every 7years and usually my MIL was always about celebrating holidays/birthdays ON the day - not before or after- AND she had to be the first to see the grand babies on those days- preferably exclusively. EXCEPT when it came to FILd BD- then no matter what day it was on she wanted to celebrate it ON Mother's Day. I Put my foot down 3 years after I became a Mother ( I just wanted some time for me and my family- we had been through hell with ds 's birthand subsequent health issues- a couple of them near death). Well that witch said to me and I quote " you know it hurts more to lose a parent than a child and we will be gone someday and then you'll be sorry" 😱oh yes she did. I've lost a child through miscarriage , both my parents and my in laws and She was wrong. I've forgiven her for all that she did because now I realize she was mentally ill and never treated- but at the time- Lord forgive me for my thoughts. 4951

What if you just let your son and DIL make their own decisions and then respect those decisions?

Signed, every DIL of ever

PS ask @BooBear about the things she does for her son that you can't 4951
