Better to have a Kroger employee call and verify a competitor has an item the store is not carrying, than have the customer go to the competitor and find it on his/her own. If a manager says "nope, we ain't got it" then I leave and go find it elsewhere and might find other things at that competitor also. As it was, I finished my shopping at Kroger, then I spent about five minutes at HEB, got the okra, and left. And I will remember that the Kroger guy helped me and so I can say nice things about how helpful and friendly he was when I fill out my weekly customer survey.
Before Atascocita Ace bought the kingwood Ace they would call and check availability. And vice-versa. They would occasionally even call the Huffman TrueValue to check on an item if it was not even on the Ace web site.

MissAmericanPie : This was just based on a few products, none of which I buy, except bananas. I always spend more at Kroger/HEB than Walmart/Aldi. To get the best deals, you really have to go to more than one store and get some things online.Also Walmarts prices vary a lot by location. The Walmart in Memorial is more than the Walmart in Porter. I would think Sugarland is on the higher end.

KingwoodNana : I have a friend that lives near Mi Tienda. He visits me 3-4 times a week. He buys his meats at Kingwood's HEB. He says they are better for the same or lower prices than the stores in his neck of the woods.

KingwoodNana : Impossible. The area is decidedly low rent commercial and residential properties.

Surprising then that the meat is more, IDK? Higher theft rate? More money on security? Lower competition? Sad that a lower income population is paying more...

Not too shocking. The HEB app shows savings from coupons and sales. I don't frequently go to the grocery store and have still racked up around $400 in savings since the start of the year.

It happens in what are called grocery store deserts.
They exist even in urban areas. The Mamdani city supermarkets proposal was for 5 in NYC areas with only bodegas, Bodegas are not much bigger than convenience stores. They have to charge higher prices because they pay higher prices to stock their shelves. It's why Wal-Mart crushed small town stores.KingwoodNana :

I menu plan based on the sales ads. I pretty much stick to Kroger (fuel points and sales), but I've become very conscious of my grocery bill now so that I'm not wasting food. I'd rather go to the store every day based on what I need for the meal that night, after I've gone through my pantry in fridge and freezer..

SarcasmWins: exactly! Good customer service comes in many forms, and this was one of them. You'd tell his manager that he left a lasting and positive impression on you.
