There are 276 schools in HISD, so the elimination of libraries is occurring in about 10% of the schools. I'm guessing these may be the schools with the greatest number of discipline problems. Hopefully, this is only temporary until they can get some of the problems under control. No one wants libraries to be closed, but these schools are currently failing their students. I'm glad they are at least trying to address the issues

Jmh256 : Very good point. Without discipline, there cannot be successful teaching.

Jmh256 : Those are the 10% that need them the most, once the books are gone, they won't have the money to replace them. Is this a language barrier problem & we're grouping them into discipline problems as a way to write them off? Students who can't keep up, act out, so others can't call them stupid!❤️😘

jv339 : I don't like that libraries are being closed either; however, I understand that the new superintendent has a huge job to tackle. I think he is addressing the major issues as he sees them. He has replaced weak principals, transferred poor teachers and monetarily incentivized strong teachers to transfer to underperforming schools. Now, he's attempting to address discipline problems. I'm guessing that one of the only spaces available is the library. I did read that these students would be watching the instruction on zoom-perhaps he's trying to get the behavior problems back into the classroom rather than sending them to an alternative school. I have no idea, but I like that he is attempting to resolve some of the issues that make learning difficult. I don't know if he will succeed, but I'm certainly hoping he will.

jv339 : it is simply a behavior issue. The language barriers are easily solved with translation apps and pairing students with others of the same languages. At one point, I had 8 different languages in my classroom last year. I did not have much discipline issues, not that students don't try to misbehave! Anyways, the discipline issue for sending the students out of the room may backfire on a teacher. If the same students are sent out, the focus will be on the student AND the teacher! The student---if he/she is doing this in several classes. And the teacher--is he/she sending students out because he/she cannot keep students focused, or is not good with classroom management? Education has and will continue changing---for both the student and the educator.

jv339 : Thank you! I appreciate your support. I didn't start out wanting to be a teacher, it was a money decision (many on this forum know I have had challenges in the last few years). I went into it because one of my sons told me that I was so much like his favorite teacher, that I should be one! And a teacher in one of his classes at KPark, posted teacher benefits, pay, etc . I considered it and while I wanted to work in higher education, I landed in teaching in a classroom . It has worked for me and because of changes occurring, I am now reaping monetary benefits. The closure of libraries is unfortunate, but downsizing of libraries in all levels of education has been occurring due to technology. I rarely see anyone with a book at most places. I see a lot of phones in hand. Sign of the times unfortunately.

Jnet : It's how lessons are learned. I wish sometimes they weren't so costly or were easier to learn. How's Eddie?
