#msg6019586Are moth balls good to put down for them? Someone told me that one time.

JandS89 : Bad for environment to put out and once I read is not legal to do so. Been years since I read that though.

v1kings28 :
What a horrible thing to find in your pool. I can barely look at that snake.

When you find one there will be 1 or 2 more. Be careful.
I'm sorry but a poisonous snake needs to be killed.

JandS89 : They don't work to keep snakes away - waste of money and time. Mothballs might keep people away though. Emoticon

Mimilane : If said snake is in your house, I understand the concern. If you have toddlers running in your back yard, it makes sense to kill the snake if you can't easily relocate it. Otherwise killing them is unnecessary and no different than killing any other wild animal (coon, squirrel, possum).

justanirishgirl: that is a younger snake and that is another reason that it is lighter of color. The snake is more likely from a litter of snakes that were born early in the summer. I don't think this was the " swim of shame"!! :D

#msg6019614justanirishgirl : all snakes can swim, some better than others. :0 also, watch for other snakes, as this one may have been a Mama, or part of a mid-summer litter.

LittleTexas : green tail means he is a juvenile.

I almost stepped on a copper head while taking out the trash when I was living on Northshore Drive many years ago.

I've had a few dogs bitten over the years. I think 4. I literally hopped over one when I couldn't stop walking in time.
One of those times when I was at the vet to get my dog treated, the old timer vet asked me what I did with the snake (copperhead). I said I threw it over the fence into the tree reserve. The frustration showed on his face that I didn't kill it although he didn't come out and say those words.
Another time one of my pups had been bitten was in the month of October. A tiny copperhead about 4 or 5". So there are babies out there now.

buffaloglenn : It's also very dangerous to try and kill a snake. There are volunteers that will come remove the snake for free.

old timer's snakebite treatment for dogs:
-immediately give the dog the appropriate dose of Benadryl for their body weight
-open up a tin of sardines and let the dog enjoy eating them..
-repeat as needed
