Sisyphus : These specific ones I speak of are academic. New education report card is out. No matter how much money we sink into it, it just gets worse. They are upping teacher pay, which is long in coming. But I really think it's a family issue.

I think it is a family problem. Too many families focus on rote learning. Reading to learn by that method makes reading totally unappealing for the young and old.
cbear : It takes courage. I also do not yet have grandchildren. One of my sons is in his early 30s, just got engaged, and they have discussed having kids. Another is in his late 20s and will soon be engaged. The third could easily be a year behind those 2. I actually hope they all have kids around the same time so they can have each other as early life peers. Since I'm retired, I look forward to being the grandfather that engages with them, makes them laugh, and helps them make sense of this world. Since there is a drop in birth rate, these next generations will have less competition for the jobs that humans can still do. I think every generation is susceptible to developing fear of the future for the next generations because they themselves are struggling to adapt to all the new variables in life that are constantly changing and will never stop changing. Just as we experienced a lack of fear as kids, so too will the next generation, since that reality will be the only reality they have ever known. They'll be fine. This is why I intend to stay on top of as many new technologies as possible and to stay aware of all cultural change. We'll all process that change differently but I don't think it's in our best interest to fear it.

cbear : There's still private and religious schools and home schooling but that all stings for what we pay in taxes. And to add insult to injury, the latest data regarding education in the US is very disheartening.
MissAmericanPie : True but.....they can still fall under the influence of unsavory people outside of that. They cannot live in a bubble. Both my DD and DS had a friend that I did not trust so I kept close watch over that. Since then ....they have drifted away form those friends. Thankful.
cbear : With the crazy increase in daily school shootings, I don't blame her. That would be a genuine concern if I were in her shoes. Hopefully she's in a district like Huffman ISD where teachers are allowed to conceal carry for protection. I'm not sure about Humble.

I know that district specifically gives teachers the option to conceal carry if they want to. I'd personally take them up on that offer and I'm sure plenty of others have. That being said I completely respect anyone who isn't comfortable with it or simply doesn't want that responsibility.

Furface11 : We both know that won't and can't happen. This just might force people, on both sides, to THINK before they spew dangerous hatred. He was all about thoughtful discussion and we need to get back to that mindset.
