As to what one considers themselves can be complicated.

Sisyphus : "His families process to become American citizens was long and expensive. Their goal was to become citizens before Eliza graduated from Kingwood Park in 2020, so she could attend college in the US. It took a total of 10 years for everyone in his family to gain citizenship."

The story clearly tells of the adversity this young man has overcome, and you can tell how proud he is to have accomplished all that he has. For someone (not you) to ask "I wonder if he considers himself an American citizen." seems condescending and belittling imo. Of course he does. It literally says it was a long and expensive process.

I read the article. Seems teachers and coaches we the ones being super ugly. They should have not been in a position of authority. Kids will be kids. They pick on who they can. I don't think was a racist thing. Do you really think white kids don't get picked on?

Toohot : "A teacher told David Gonzales in elementary school that he wasn't going to accomplish anything.

Coaches in middle school shouted random Hispanic last names to get his attention.

Classmates said slurs loud enough for him to hear, and others told him not to speak Spanish when talking to his family.

David, who immigrated with his parents and sister from Mexico when he was only 3, got worn down growing up in the predominantly white Kingwood community. His self-worth and confident hit a low in middle school."

Did it seem like coaches and teachers were the only ones being ugly to you? Because he specifically said that classmates also used slurs and told him not to speak Spanish. That's pretty awful, imo. Saying that "kids will be kids" instead of correcting that kind of behavior only enables it. Racist teenagers who are enabled grow up to be racist adults when their parents have the attitude that "kids will be kids." It's up to the parents to break the cycle. This article isn't about anyone else, it's about this extraordinary young man and what he faces living in the Kingwood area, not about white kids or whether they get picked on. David is the one who got a full ride to Duke, and he's being recognized for his success and is telling his story. It's okay to acknowledge that the bubble isn't perfect. In fact, it has a pretty racist reputation whether y'all want to recognize that or not.

MissAmericanPie :
Good for him. My daughter had a friend in school whose parents came here for work from Peru. They were all lovely people who we embraced full on.

Sure kids have a better sense of humor about some racial stereotypes and some children aren't being raised to be adults but merely grown children with thin skin who will fall for any inconvenience and label it as racist. The new common phrase "ashamed of nothing, offended by everything". In short, no we Kingwood parents are not raising racist kids. The nerve of some people!

Bsmith3drdesign : Can you please give me an example or two so I have a somewhat better idea of what you're referring to in this specific context?
