After having several new portable generators fail during storms and a preschooler having leukemia treatment, we decided to spend the money. 2 story, 2420 sq ft.
We had one installed in 2016. It's done a great job. Yes, we continued the warranty & the service contracts with Wired.
22 KW for $4491: on sale Generac from Home Depot, included delivery by freight
installation $6230: by Wired
Gas Line connection across yard: ?? that receipt seems to have disappeared! I remember it being very expensive since it had to go across the entire yard! We had already had work done to provide appropriate connections for increased gas flow for the natural gas grill.

Kittle :
You only pay $150.00 for each maintenance visit? Who do you use?

ask them to include a soft start device for your ac in the price of the install. some installers will cheap out and put a hard start kit in, or sometimes nothing at all. they stagger the fan and compressor from coming on at the same time. also, to reduce the inrush current they prevent the compressor from coming up to 100% speed all at once.

I will double check that number - it may be low. We use Generator Service Center. It's definitely more when the battery is replaced. I will check our last receipt and get back to you.

We have gas hookup on one side of the house and electric on the other. Would need to run electric through the house and install the generator on the gas side. Usually a Generac set up cost is about twice the cost of the gen.

Update on generator maintenance. The fee August, 2023 was $150. February, 2024 was $175.

The company that installed and serviced the generator initially was sold. Generator Service Center does the maintenance now. 281-359-1204

Does anyone have a portable generator that uses propane instead of gasoline? I appreciate any feedback.

teatime : Mine run on gasoline or natural gas. The propane would work fine, but you would need a bunch of small tanks for a longer outage, or a large tank.

Well worth the cost, at least IMHO.

billcherie2 : Ours are almost next to each other so we're luckily there. buffaloglenn : Yeah we'll go higher than lower. Do they make an 18? That would be perfect. Also, is the mini split going to cause a huge difference once we install it! Kittle : Oh absolutely! We're actually going to buy the generator direct (Kohler, Generac, Cummings, Lowes or Home Depot. My husband is incredibly handy so can do the basic stuff but then we'll have a plumber, electrician and contractor do the actual work. And the contractor (who knows a plumber and an electrician) just happens to be one of my husband's closest friends for the last 40 yesrs and he's done a TON of work for us over the years. His company will do anything but they mainly focus on building multi-million dollar apartments complexes across the country.

StormChaser : Like most things, size matters…. Emoticon A 9000 btu mini split needs about 2500 watts of power (2.5 kilowatts). So you would of course have to factor that in to the generator sizing.

teatime : We do. Husband did all the work himself. He hooked it up to electrical panel we used 2 tanks This week w it. We won't use fuel in generator. He doesn't want it to clog up. I can ask what he all bought for it. This was a few years ago during Covid. We had search for the parts. Most you can buy from Home Depot but one part he had to order online. It runs the entire house ac 3 refrigerators, fans , & all tv plus is chargers are phones. I have no used washer or dryer during that time. I would rather wait have the ac instead.
