I think I tried it once and did not like it. Not a fan of king cake either. Too dry.

Rapsalot : The Philippines is a predominantly Catholic, and many of our religious traditions reflect Spanish influence.

I find it very dry , too. A lot of Latin breads and pastries are made to be dry, as their culture will dip the bread in their coffee/cafe au lait, during their afternoon break for a snack, as many do not eat dinner until after 9 pm. I do enjoy a trip to El Bolillo on Airlines, and have found amazing bolillos and other pastries just off of Sawdust at 45, at Panaderia Estrella, a small, family owned bakery ,with lots of good items. 202 Sawdust +Road, Suite 101, by a liquor store in a small strip center, located right behind the HEB at Sawdust and 45.

I have Filipino friends. Sometimes we have merienda.
There is an excellent Filipino dessert maker that does pop ups in the Heights. She does all kinds of stuff, not Filipino but the other she had great lumpia. She only had 1 batch of them. I didn't ask if she'd always have them or other Filipino foods.

#msg6043898Kaylagirl : That sounds like a lovely day! This time of year makes me miss my home country, the Philippines. We celebrate "Undas", our tradition of remembering and honoring loved ones who have passed. It's a meaningful time for families to come together.

Chickadee : I haven't heard her use the word Undas (different word in Visaya, maybe?), but my wife generally visits the Philippines in October for her town's Fiesta and also to honor the graves of families. It is a great time for family to come together. All our little nieces and nephews are all grown now with kids of their own! My wife went to Cebu and Manila to also visit other family. I couldn't go this year, but all the little ones I haven't seen in 20 years all sent me back treats, like literally a whole suitcase of goodies!

Reivax : I think in Bisaya, it's called "Kalag-Kalag." I came back two weeks ago with a suitcase full of goodies, too, from family, friends, and neighbors! Haha!
