Chow :
It looks like a lot of work, but it looks beautiful and peaceful. I think some work can be fun, especially if you get to enjoy a nice piece of land like that.

#msg6020366Work or Fun….. Does this look like work or fun? I'm still trying to decide. Can some work be considered fun?

Chow : Definitely both - but you also don't have to mow pastures like a regular suburban lawn. And you can add trees (pecan?) to reduce the amount of maintenance, although trees have their own maintenance requirements. We keep about 5 acres open in our place in Buffalo, and the rest is forest, so we have a timber exemption on the land. A tractor makes quick work of mowing the "pasture" area a few times a year. Txbutterfly mentioned goats over cattle. Cows are work, horses are insane work. I have one friend that does nothing but take care of his horses. And they almost never ride them.

buffaloglenn : I'm not doing horses if anything I'd rent the stables out but then that means there's people there all the time. I'm looking at tractors I'm not against it I just don't want to mow every weekend, I have some buddies that do that and it seems like that's all they do

Chow : Understood - but most guys that mow that often are trying to keep their pasture area looking like a city lawn. No need to do that; in fact it's better to let the grass grow a little, especially as dry as it gets in our area in the summer. I mow mine about four times a year, and it looks nice.

Chow : Mow the open area to keep it open (more valuable for resale), unless you want something like fruit or pecan trees. If you did want to plant some trees, you could do it in orderly fashion in an open area.

buffaloglenn : I'd plant a lemon tree but it'd be closer to the house. That's about it
