Horrible pests! Not a week goes by here in the east Texas boonies that we don't see at least one dead hog with vehicle body parts strewn across a local road. The critters average 250 - 300 lbs (up to 450 lbs) , can jump 3 feet in the air, and run up to 25 mph. Colliding with one at 55 mph can total a compact car and send people to the hospital. We have a "sounder" (hog family group) at the back of our property near the creek and always carry heavy "artillery" anytime we venture in that direction. They can be extremely aggressive and will charge through a 6 foot chain link fence like a bulldozer. Locals trap or "shoot on sight". Young ones are tender, tasty, and plentiful.
SteveT, wmubronco and golfshot reacted They are natives.
They are all over Wilderness park.
The park closes twice a year to gather them up.
Kingwood and wilderness share a shoreline on Lake Houston.
They can have 2 or more litters a year .
I've counted in the teens.
They are nocturnal and avoid humans , but can be aggressive if their young are with them.
Dogs always want to engage them, so keep pets on a leash.
And they are pigs , not boars.
Big difference.
Remember a few years ago there was a lady coming home from her nurse nightshift and she got out of her car predawn and a pack of feral hogs attacked and killed her. I think it was in the Spring area. The police officer first on the scene said it was the worst thing he ever saw. So be careful.
