I guess they probably talk about my DW and I, cause we always ask for extra bread. My DW always gets extra lemons for her water, she likes it that way. Years ago In My Opinion the service you received at a resturant was better.

I don't mean to cause offense. I'm just saying all waiters talk about their tables. If it's not the gluten allergy, it's the shirt their wearing. I was a great waitress. It set me up to me a great teacher too, because interestingly enough, both jobs require assessing a room full of people and determining who needs the most assistance first, who has a quick question, who just needs time to think without intrusion, etc.

So waiters are talking about the shirts people are wearing? Who cares about that lol. These must be the ones not doing their job very well if they have time for that. Some servers/wait people are crappy, and some are good. DH likes to tip by cost of the meal. I like to tip better for the great ones that do their job well.

Yes, as with any job, there are folks that care and perform. There are also those that should be doing something else. I am glad you benefited from your time and then used those skills later. I have over the years conducted and instructed a lot of sales training and then management training. One thing I learned you can not teach people skills, folks either have them or not. TY for sharing your experience. I think we are all guilty of talking about people.

Yes. I don't mean that servers get in 20 minute conversations about shirts. I'm just saying there's a bunch of innocuous statements about tables being thrown around. A server complaining about a tip is very common, and though he shouldn't have been overheard, it's really no big deal. He forgot about it 5 seconds after he said it.And I'm positive the poster tipped a relatively decent amount. A lot of people still think roughly 20% is a good amount, but servers are math wizards. If it's not 20% including taxes, ie. the whole bill, then it's a sub par tip. 25% is good and 30% is really good. I tend to tip 25% and add $1 for good measure. With that said... I'm also not a let's leave a tip jar out all kinds of places person. Not everyone gets a tip from me. Like counter service at a restaurant does not get 20%. If I'm getting my own drinks, you get $1 cause you're also getting a wage.

I've always known that the waitstaff would often talk about their customers, but usually it was out of earshot from the dining area. Normally, it would be back in the kitchen. Having worked as a hostess and waitress, and also in retail in my twenties this was pretty common. It's not at all appropriate to complain right in front of the customer, though, and I feel like an apology should have been offered.

This is true. It's a kitchen/walk in refrigerator/smoke area conversation for sure. Let's also not forget how much tables talk about their waiters also in rude ways that we overhear. Just because you're tipping doesn't mean all manners get to go out the window.

Yes, a good reminder. We do have more sense than to do that, though. I make sure my family is polite while we are in the restaurant.

golfshot : Extra Lemon here too. Two glasses of water one with ice and one without. One is my pitcher if they get busy.

AnnieOakley I still think it was very rude that he said that in front of her. I am a good and sometimes great tipper, but that comment would make me want my tip back.
