Toohot : I agree. Getting picked on as a kid is pretty common. Too poor, too rich. Too fat, too skinny. Too tall, too short. Skin color is too dark, too white. Speech is too redneck, too ghetto. Bucktooth, underbite. And so on.

Spork : That's bc it's a human problem…..part of humanity and the human experience.
When my father came to this country he was taken advantage of, had his money stolen and started his life here by sweeping floors. Oh he didn't end up there. He had CHARACTER. That one thing will elevate you no matter what comes.

The young man in the story found a way to adjust and succeed.

MissAmericanPie : He did. Was your father a child mistreated because of his race or ethnicity?

Sisyphus : Yep. Immigrant from South America (Peru) but of Italian descent. My grandparents wanted to come here but didn't make it so he came alone as a teen. By himself. There were no freebies, social programs or welfare.

What a truly impressive young man. He faced challenges and adversity with strength and determination. I have every confidence that he'll reach his goals, and I wouldn't be at all surprised to see him become Surgeon General in the future.

I wonder if he considers himself an American??? Looks like the land of opportunity lived up to its name.

CoffeeandWine : Do you not?

Sisyphus : He says at the end of the article something about being "Mexican." I'm sure he's proud of his heritage, but when you live in the U.S. and receive all the benefits, geez can't you consider yourself an American first??? Also, I'm sure the kid dealt with alot of bullying (I received my share in school and it was horrible) but it's a shame the article focused on those who treated him badly. I KNOW he had to have had some good experiences living in Kingwood and probably had many good teachers who weren't evil Kingwood racists.

CoffeeandWine : DID YOU READ THIS ARTICLE?! What he faced and what shaped him into the extraordinary young man he is? This story isn't about what he considers himself. His story is that he was bullied for his heritage and the he used the hate as motivation for greatness. He literally says so. That's something to be commended.
