GoldenGirl : No kidding, It would be life changing to win that kind of money. The opportunities it would create for him would be amazing.
Good looking out Pops. I know you understand math concepts well, I've witnessed it myself though that was well over 20 years ago. Pat yourself on the back for teaching him things (not only math) that will help him all through his life whether he knows it now or not.
Congratulations to your son; this is wonderful! I taught 3rd grade, and can tell you that the kids like yours, with advanced expertise on certain subjects, AND good parents who support them, went on to do very well, in their academic career! One young lady I taught began taking college classes, as a freshman in high school, and after high school graduation, got her BS degree within 18 months. She went on to medical school, and is a wonderful pediatrician, now! I say y'all need to get a big, celebratory Cookie Cake, for him!
When my younger son graduated, he was also very highly ranked. He got quite a few scholarships; Coca Cola has a Lot of money that one can apply for, also, there are scholarships that are based on their chosen field. ie, scholarships for students who plan to be mechanical engineers, by a trust endowed by a man who spent his career as a M.E.. Once you start researching, you will find many. Apply, apply, apply. My son had to write a few short essays as to why he chose his career path, and he was awarded quite a few of those. The money surely helped, and now, his employer is paying for his Masters :D
My cousin had a son who got awards like that in science and math when he was your son's age. Then he went to the #1 STEM High School in Illinois and today he is a physicist from Stanford and now at Northwestern studying things like
...quantum information science
...studies of quantum behavior at macro-scales
One thing I will say, is always Ask your child if he wants to be moved into other classrooms, take part in a program, etc. My brother really IS a genius; a true Doogie Howser. Graduated from college at 19, aced his EMCATS, and was one of the youngest surgeons (also became an anesthesiologist; so double medical degree!) licensed in the state of Texas, holding the record for a long time. My parents "placed" him in all of this acceleration, but, being a boy, he did not Mature as quickly, and that was a problem, as he aged. In that light, I always asked my son If he wanted to participate. At first, he was shy about it, and did not want to as much, so he would not seem 'different'. By junior high, he was glad for the mental stimulation, and began to enjoy the advanced classes and programs. TG my brother married a nurse practitioner with a Masters, who is 3 years older than he is; she Tells him what suit and tie to wear together, and calls him on his b.s.
