SummerSneeze :
I remember when we only had 713 and we didn't have to dial the area code for local numbers. I even remember when the first 3 numbers had letter/names..like MI was Mission. Our home number started with 643

ZMAN: without an area code to identify a particular region, how many digits do you think your phone number would be? (Tricky question)

Yes! We must be the oldies; I am for sure. I remember seven digit phone numbers. I also remember calling an operator to place long distance calls.

Kittle Wiseowl :
yes, just the 7 digit phone numbers until we got a 2nd area code. Also remember when we used words in place of the 1st 2 digits. Like KILMER 5-1111 in New Brunswick, NJ.

New area code 621 is being added to the area codes for Houston. Wow I remember when we just had 713 and 281.

SummerSneeze :
The last time I noticed, the booth was still there but I don't know if there is a payphone in it.

My DW and I were recently talking about payphones 'back in the day'. It's hard to believe that we didn't all get ear or mouth infections from those communal handsets. Today, we'd never stand for that because we're so germaphobic.
