The title totally relates to KDC. Excluding me, of course.

Supposedly, there was a threat made at Santa Fe prior to, and unrelated to, the shooting, but there was no action taken against the student. At least that was reported on the radio this morning.

PeterB123 : It was 2 students and they were texting a hit list. The first reports I heard said that a teacher saw one of the texts and reported the students. I have not been able to find anything on that, but this is the Chronicle's report from Sept 6th. www.chron.com/news/e ducation/article/San ta-Fe-High-warns-par ents-of-threat-

TexasOma : It is scary they make them because the authorities can't determine which one will carry through.

ladybeachbum : Exactly, but teens just don't make the connection. In fact, they probably think they will never get caught or think they are being watched . Something I learned in psychology classes many, many years ago is teenagers just do not use their brains the way adults do, the brains are still developing.

Unfortunately, in today's world, we expect our teens to skip this step in development. I'm not excusing teens for any crimes or missteps they make, they do need to be punished, but IMO sometimes the punishments are out of line with what their brains can understand. Our laws make excuses for criminals who have mental deficits, yet they do not make exceptions for a underdeveloped teenage brain. A murder or rapist can get a lighter sentence by claiming mental retardation or abusive home life - but a teenager gets no consideration.

I know for fact that the shooter at Santa Fe High School in May was from an extremely dysfunctional and abusive home and was severely bullied at school. Yet he has been crucified by the media and public opinion. Our youngest grandson and his cousin attended school with this child thru their school years. The cousin was friends with the boy and this is where my information comes from. Yes, the shooter needs to be punished, and it makes me sad that he lived with abuse and will forever live with more abuse in prison.

Here is an excellent article on the Psychology of a Teenage Brain ---
www.psychologytoday. com/us/blog/health-m atters/201006/the-te enagers-brain

This part is the best description --- Undeveloped Brain Territory

One part of the teen brain that is undeveloped until the mid-twenties lies in that second scoop of the ice cream cone. This is called the pre-frontal cortex (PFC). This part of the brain, when fully developed, is in a constant dialogue with the emotional brain (the limbic brain). In the adult, the PFC and the limbic brain are in balance, each one inhibiting the other. So when an adult has an emotional reaction to being cut off by a speeding car, the PFC part of the brain says-"Hey, stop, and think about your desire to go speeding after that car. You might get a ticket, you might cause an accident, your insurance rates will go up". For the teen, however, the PFC is undeveloped, and the emotional brain (including the amygdala mentioned above) rules the moment, until the PFC is developed in the mid-twenties. The teen thinks: "This is going to be exciting!"-if he thinks at all. Auto insurance companies figured this one out long ago.

ladybeachbum : Mine turned at 15 & I didn't know which of us was going to survive. He had found the evils of girls and drugs - the girl had more power than me (she's the mother of our 2 grandsons). But, when he was about 18, his adult brain started kicking in and about a year before he died, I saw that he was really becoming a normal adult.

AND --- I remember when I was a teen....I was not a horrible teen, but I wasn't the best either. By the time I was 21 I was getting it together, by 25 I think I was finally a thinking adult. My hubby, on the other hand, was born an adult. He was never a goofy, awkward teenager & he seemed to have it together from the day I met him. He was always focused on his future. 4951

TexasOma : I am so sorry about your son. We watch our kids and hope and pray for them to know right from wrong but sometimes it comes too late. I still preach all the time and he's never been into drugs or drinks much but man he can drive me crazy. With all of it, we are very close so I sometimes see he is listening....sometimes. 4951
