Roof rats We had an interesting knock on the door yesterday at 2:24 PM. To preface, my husband and I work from home. I was working at the time, so my husband answered the door. A young man knocked and stated that he was doing insulation at a house down the street from ours and that the home had roof rats. He said he was notifying us for safety. My husband stood there waiting for the sales pitch, but nothing, the guy just left. I always want to see the good in people and businesses, so is this normal? Have you had a person from a business not sell you anything and just tell you that a house down the way had some sort of infestation problem?

I really want to believe it was genuine and helpful, but who would waste their time just to report that to neighbors without there being some kind of benefit to them. Nothing at all you can do about what's going on with your neighbor's house. They can leave them a note just like you could. What's the benefit of stopping and telling you, unless to scare you into buying some kind of "roof rat" prevention, hence a sales pitch?

We've had a problem with rats since the neighbors stopped mowing their backyard 6 months ago.

Maybe they saw an exodus of rats! and thought ... oh man ... that was bad and those rats have to go somewhere!! LOL!!

I was tired of the possums scratching for insects near my fence posts and clawing up the dirt at their base (caught them in the act) so I bought some of that Repels-All that you can find at Walmart and was pleasantly surprised that it worked so well.
Around this time of year, Walmart has their lawn and garden stuff on clearance (when I try to stock up on garden stuff.) It stinks but the scent doesn't carry that far. It says it works for rats too. It has even cut down on the stray cats who like to do their business in the garden.
Now the critters might get used to it but it hasn't happened for me yet. Good luck.
I had a very similar experience last week, but he was trying to sell me something... He may have been waiting for your reaction before giving you a sales pitch...
Donnawisdom and donnatella reacted Sketchy at best. With someone being home so much, I think you would know.

Conversely, we started getting rats in our yard once the house behind ours switched real estate agents and the new firm sent over a lawn service to landscape the overgrown yard. I'm guessing the rats were seeking refuge... sure wish the little coyote that strolled through every night would handle them. We've put out traps and killed three successfully, but our cameras pick them up every other night, running along the fence. 🤮
