Hurricane Alicia occurred 43 years ago this week. It was the first major hurricane I ever experienced and remember the day it hit us in Forest Cove. We had two small children and I was so frightened. No power, no phone and all the roads were blocked with downed trees and debris. What a mess! Does anyone else remember it?

Picasso13 : Oh yes - my brother and I cleaned up for our neighbors after the storm. We rode our bikes to my grandmother's house to check on it, when the eye moved over us. She lived close but was out of town at my Uncle's. Power was out for about a week in our part of Southwest Houston.

My parents owned a convenience store and all the kids came and ate ice cream before it all melted 😀 I was 12, not much changed for me other than we couldn't ride 3 wheelers because we didnt have fuel. We had to help haul wood that was being cut up. And I got to push debris into the burn pile...I love driving a dozer 😀

I was just out of high school and me and my sister went to Cancun. Our first big girls trip away and we were stuck there without money. Everyone was nice and took care of us. Crazy enough my sister ran into a man she knew from work and he gave us a extra credit card in case we needed it. I guess there would be worst places to be stuck.

I did not live here at that time. My old neighbor told me that during some hurricane, Hwy 59 was a parking lot going North with people trying to leave. Was that Alicia?

I didn't live here then. The first one I remember was Bonnie that hit Beaumont when I was a senior in high school. It wasn't that bad, just power outages.
The first major one for me was Ike. There was also the TS Allison in 2001 when I was managing a restaurant on I-10. By the time, I was allowed to leave, it was too late. I didn't have GPS then, not only could I not get home, I couldn't get back to the restaurant. I spent the night at a Shell station in my minivan. The next day I saw how bad it was. I-10 at Washington was underwater. That was before the expansion. I want to say downtown tunnels/courthouse were under water too.

I spent the next week making meals at the restaurant for Transtar.

KingwoodNana : That makes more sense, that was only a couple years before I moved here.

I lived in Conroe and no power for 1 week. I drove around in my car a lot. It was so hot in August. What day was it? Last week of August I think.

I googled. It was August 18th. I was 17 and about to graduate HS. My birthday is the 24th so I'm thinking we got power right on my birthday.

Kaylagirl :
You're correct. It was Thursday, August 18th that it hit Kingwood. The reason I said it was the week of the hurricane is because it affected other areas before us and other areas after us. It took us weeks to get things cleaned up. I remember it well. There things that we experience that stay with us forever.
