I don't understand why crawfish is sold by the pound when you only eat maybe 10% of its weight, not even taking in to account the labor involved in eating it.

BooBear : I agree......so much work for such a small piece of meat.

BooBear :
Same with shrimp. Oysters are sold by each. But clams and mussels are sold by pound. It would be difficult to sell crawfish & shrimp by the each. Then it goes into fish…. Whole w/bones or fillets. We seem to always be paying for something we don't use.

$13 a pound for crawfish is just crazy! I sure hope this price goes down.

Peak price season may not be the best time for price sensitive shopping.

But 1-800-Crawfish (17 miles away) is selling live for $10.50 as of 4 hrs ago.

Crawfish tail meat is going for about $16 per pound at HEB. That sure puts $12.99 a pound in perspective for whole crawfish when it takes 6-7 pounds of crawfish to produce 1 pound of tail meat.

That's genuinely not worth it.

Seems like it will be cheaper to head to Louisiana if we want crawfish this year.

JamminTX : Here in St. Charles Parish where I live in Louisiana, I usually offer crawfish for free to forum members, just bring your own shovel and bucket. But this year? Right now in looking through my widow, I don't see a single crawfish mound toward the back of my yard where many usually appear. No one ever took me up on my offer of free crawfish, anyway, so I guess it doesn't matter.

We still have rabbits. Very healthy and energetic brown rabbits. And alligators. Someone could eat well here for free with also foraging for edible, nutritious weeds which are plentiful. Not this vegetarian someone, but someone who likes crawfish, rabbits, and alligators on the dinner plate.

HappyNew : Yep, I have family all over S. Louisiana. We'll eat pretty much eat anything that doesn't eat us first. I have fond memories of my friend, a native of New Mexico, telling my aunt that her smothered squirrel was the best 'chicken' she ever had 🤣. We all know how to clean and butcher a snapping turtle, pig, alligator, etc. We walk to the gas station around the corner from my cousin's house and haul back a kitchen garbage bag full of 10 lbs of boiled crawfish for ~$15. One can eat very well in Louisiana, we always do.

JamminTX :
My friends dad was from Louisiana and made gumbo the one time. He used possum. It wasn't bad but greasy as all hell. He said they had possum farms. I never checked to see if he was messing with me or not because I really didn't want to know. Non sequitur, I did get a deal on a little over 3lbs of bones turkey breast with skin for $10 at HEB with a $5 off coupon that expires this next Tuesday.
