New area code 621 is being added to the area codes for Houston. Wow I remember when we just had 713 and 281.

Yeah, I saw that we were getting a new area code. I too remember when it was 713 & 281. Then came 832. And this is just in the 30 years since DH & I moved to Texas.

Growing up in Beaumont we had 713 as well, then they changed Beaumont and other surrounding areas to 409. Then living in Houston mid-nineties there was a big flight with businesses outside the loop not wanting to be signaled out to change to 281. Now we will have five. The latest is supposed to provide enough numbers for 9 years.

Houston, Texas has five area codes: 713, 281, 832, 346, and 621.
Wow, I had forgotten about 346 added in 2014.

@Kaa054 :
Woodville was also in the 713 area code, as was most of SE Texas.

True, you can have a number from anywhere now. People usually keep the same cell number when they move. It really only matters for outgoing calls from traditional landlines. I had to change my cell to a local number when my kids were in school so the school could call me.

We have had to do 10 digits for so long but there are many places where you can still just use 7 for local calling.

I remember when there were no area codes. My mom didn't like it, and said she would refuse to do it. Lol

NeverPayRetail: I can remember when we didn't have area codes. You had to call the operator (dial O) to place a long distance call. (And the operators spoke English)
