Cracking Down On Fake Temporary License Plates 
As part of the Harris County Toll Road Authority - HCTRA's ongoing “Tag You’re It†fictitious temporary tag enforcement campaign, Precinct 5 deputies stopped a vehicle on the tollway system on May 3rd for operating a motor vehicle with a fictitious temporary tag. An investigation into the origin of the fictitious plate led to charges being filed against Moshood Ideyemi, the owner of Mosh H Town Auto Dealer. After being pulled over the driver provided proof to toll road deputies that he had paid cash for the vehicle and had not received a title or permanent plates but was being provided multiple temporary tags which is a violation of state law. Ideyemi was interviewed and unable to provide the proper paperwork showing why the title and permanent plates where not in his possession to give to the buyer of the vehicle. Ideyemi told deputies he believed he was able to print multiple temporary tags to vehicles while waiting on titles. The Harris County District Attorney’s Office accepted charges of tampering with a government document which carries a maximum penalty of a third-degree felony on the dealership owner. After the warrant was issued, Ideyemi was taken into custody. Texas DMV was also notified of the dealership title and registration violations. Our ongoing enforcement campaign will continue to target not only individuals using fake plates, but also the dealerships that continue to sell and issue fictitious temporary tags.
TownHubAdmin : I guess the answer is just drive on temp tag even though expired until you get your permanent license tags. It is amazing how many cars I see with expired temp tags.
MeMyselfAndI : Aren't the dealers required to have the titles to all the cars they are selling before they sell them. Not very smart to not have clear titles to all vehicles dealers sell.
Lulu45 : They must not because about a month after we were married we paid off my wife's car. A couple of weeks later we traded that car in for one that was not a POS and had not yet received the title paperwork from the finance company. The dealer made us promise to bring that to them as soon as we had it (which we did). Found out that they sold her car two days after we traded it in so they definitely sold a car they didn't have the title to.

The procedure for getting the permanent tags needs to be revised. Why aren't the dealers allowed to keep like 25 to 50 permanent sets of plates on site so when a vehicle is sold and the prep for the drive out is done, they can secure the plates then? Instead, now they have temp plates they have to put on the vehicle until they can pay for the permanent ones after the vehicle is purchased. But don't they also pay for the temporary ones? Probably it has to do with the state receiving the funds for the permanent plates first before issuing them to the dealer.
Lulu45 : It seems like the dealer would just charge TT&L- Tax Title & Licence plates.
e : I agree it should be illegal. Texas takes their good old time in getting the plates out for new/used car purchases. My husband found an error on a title for a classic car he wanted to sell, and it took them 6 months to get it fixed and get him a new title. Ridiculous. Have you noticed how many drive with their sticker out of date? I'm not brave enough to do that. In fact, I just ordered a new one for my husbands truck and it doesn't expire until end of June.

One can obtain forged temp plates, inspection stickers, EZ-Tags, and even fake Tx DL/ID cards at certain Mexican flea markets and cantinas. Might be a good place to start if they're serious this time.
