From another thread, it appears that some people have trouble with directions.  How many of you can read a road map?I know with GPS, map reading is becoming a lost skill.  I started reading maps on our family trips when I was young.  I still keep maps in my glove compartment.  As a habit, I usually want to know where North is wherever I am. 4951

I can. I have a very good sense of direction. My wife is always surprised that I can find my way around a place after just one visit! 4951

I can read a map but I have trouble following a map.  I have had 'adventures' (my word for being lost) in Memphis, Lubbock, Amarillo, Montgomery (AL), Austin...............pretty much anywhere I was navigating alone. I have a very poor sense of direction - north is always UP.  I get turned around easily and do not recognize that I've passed the same location 3 million times. I do have enough sense to stop and ask directions, but if the person gives me complicated directions, I'll remember 2 or 3 turns then stop again until I get back on the correct road again. I am very thankful for GPS. Even with GPS I can get lost, my inclination is that I know better than that little lady cooped up inside the contraption.  I'm learning to listen to the little lady, but sometimes I override her instructions and I'll end up following her directions to get out of my predicament.  4951

Anytime I travel, I go to mapquest and look at the road map first just to get an idea of the roads and directions.  I have always been good with maps.  Before the GPS's came out, at work we carried around the Mapsco's or Key May books.  My partner, the female one, would have to turn it upside down to get her orientation straight between north and south.  4951

I can. Growing up, I was the navigator on family trips when I got old enough because my Mom couldn't find her way out of a paper bag as my dad used to say. I don't have a GPS- I use Google Maps or a paper one. Dh is very grateful- especially when we're stuck in traffic on I-10 in LA. We just jump off and go around. We've seen some mighty interesting stuff off the beaten path in LA 4951

@WskyTngoFxtrt:
I use to love watching my pawpaw drawing blueprints. He spent hours with me once designing a house with all of my 8 yo specifications.

I can read a road map just fine.  In 1985 my ex-DW and I started out in Pinconning, Michigan with a tank of gas, a RandMcNally map book of the US, and a destination of Fort Lewis, Washington.  Once we got to Tacoma, WA we bought a local map and started our life together.I can also read a topographical map, triangulate my current location, plot a destination, shoot an azimuth (with a compass), and keep a pretty accurate pace/distance count while either walking or jogging.  Just need to dig in a box or two in the attic and find my Ranger beads so I don't lose count.  ;-) 4951
