I guess it is OK for members of Congress to get raises but not the men and women who fight and die for their country.September 6, 2013This week, President Obama sent a letter to Congress stating that he is using his authority under law to cap the active duty military pay raise at 1 percent. MOAA’s President Vice Adm. Norb Ryan, USN (Ret) responds to the President’s announcement in this video imploring Congress to maintain the 1.8 percent pay raise established under law.Comparability can’t work unless it’s sustained through both good and bad times.  The President has executive authority to notify Congress of an alternative pay adjustment affecting active duty military pay, if the President considers the adjustment necessary due to national emergency or economic concerns. He is required to do so by September 1 before the implementation year.  Under current law, the active duty pay raise would be 1.8%. In the 2004 National Defense Authorization Act, Congress passed a law tying future military pay raises in the private sector, as measured by the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Employment Cost Index (ECI). Over the past twelve years, Congress worked hard to eliminate a 13.5% pay gap caused by repeatedly capping military raises below private sector pay growth in the 1980s and ‘90s.  As the FY14 defense authorization bill moves forward, the two chambers don’t see eye-to-eye on the scheduled pay raise. Earlier this year, the House rejected the administration’s pay cap and authorized a 1.8 percent raise, while the Senate Armed Services Committee supported the cap of 1.0 percent   4951

I dunno, apparently there were enough stupid people to vote (2 or 3 times each) for Obama. Makes me sick. The smart people have to suffer. No wonder the founding fathers thought people were not smart enough to vote. History repeats itself. 4951

Dead people voted,, kids indoctrinated through liberal colleges voted and the freebie give me crowd voted and it still wasn't enough for him to win so he threw in the bribed and paid for votes and the fraudulent votes.Obama did not win the election, he stole it. Thats why I dont respect him as our president of the united states, I don't have to because the people did not vote him in.No matter what side I'm on you can look any of my history up and you will never see post or information that I ever talked with such hatred or disregard of any other President we have had. Obama is not our President. He is not even an American Citizen, He is an impostor...plain and simple 4951

@Retired_Engineer: Many are but not enough are tired enough to join in on a revolt of some sort but they know eventually that will happen so thats why they dont want us armed. Could you imagine if we all stormed the white house like they stormed in Egypt....a new better country we would have if we showed that we are not allowing Government to grow any bigger.

I offer the following just as an alternative view, and something for your consideration.  If you notice in the original op, there is a line that says  - "Over the past twelve years, Congress worked hard to eliminate a 13.5% pay gap caused by repeatedly capping military raises below private sector pay growth in the 1980s and ‘90s."   That tells me that presidents and or Congress requesting a lid on military pay has been occurring long before President Obama came into office.  Additionally the timeline covers BOTH Republican and Democratic Administrations in that military Emoticonay raises have consistently lagged behind private sector growth in the 80's and 90's   Now whether the practice should be continued is up for fair debate.  But the subtle suggestion by some this situation is somehow unique to President Obama does not stand up to historical fact.   4951
