I looked up a thread about this from last year.  My wife and I went to Cleveland.  There was only one customer there when we got there.  Got both of them taken care of in about 15 minutes.  And the lady was even nice and friendly!   But by the time we left (about 12noon), there were about 6-8 people waiting.  I guess they were there on their lunch break.  My license doesn't expire until September, but I got a card in the mail that said you could renew up to a year before it expires and that summer was their busiest time.  I had to renew in person this time.  I renewed on-line last time.Cleveland is a little drive, but it's worth it! 4951

@Retired_Engineer: How long is the drive from Kingwood to Cleveland?  I heard the office in Spring is not bad either.

@DavidWebb:  Once you hit 59/69, I'd say it's about 30 minutes total.  The office is hard to find, so either bring a good map or use GPS directions to the Drivers License office (shared with a Sheriffs office).Spring has a new "mega" center that supposedly moves things along quicker for crowds.   I figured the time to both were about the same.

@silly123:  So, should we avoid certain roads that your DD will be driving on?

Warning on going to Cleveland - we went early June over a year ago to get my daughter's permit - got there at 9:40 and finished up around 2 pm. It was awful - we waited out in the heat that whole time. I guess that is the summer crowd when the kids can go and not miss school. 4951

*True story*
Me and my best friend (who was about 4 months pregnant with my niece) went to the DPS in Humble. This was about 13 years ago. Anyway she had to renew her license and take her picture. I was waiting in line with her, and I know its hard to believe we were acting stupid. She had thumped me right in my throat when I was talking to the popo about how stupid she was. They called her name to stand in front of the camera, right before she walked up there I said "hey look at this" and I snapped a rubber band right across her forhead! In her pic you could see a little red triangle! 4951

How many times can you renew it online?  I've been here just over 10 years and I don't think I've had to go in once to get a new picture taken...  How will I know when they want me to come in?  I just won't be able to renew online or do they send a notice telling me to come in. 4951

@goldi1959: If you have to go in person the system will not let you renew it online.  Try to renew it and it will tell you have to come in the office etc.
