Our family has decided to go Gluten free this year. I have Celiac and we suspect our dd does too.  We figured this would be the perfect time to go completely gluten free. My dd loves pasta but can't tell the difference b/t the regular and other kind.  I am so happy b/c we won't have to have three different meals anymore.  My only concern is my daughter loves bread and tortilla wraps.  I don't eat any bread so I am trying to think of alternatives for her lunches. Any ideas? 4951

I emailed my sister who has Celiac to ask what she fixes her son for lunch. He has celiac too.

I know he likes to eat cheese wrapped with lunch meat. Fruit and gluten free pretzels. He also like gluten free cupcakes and donuts. I think Kroger has those GF items.

Also you can get Udis white bread. It's the best tasting gluten free bread. I ate gluten free for one summer and still had my sandwiches on Udis bread. It was good.

@N+T: She loves yogurt!! She does have that every day in her lunch.  If she could, she would have yogurt for every meal.  I haven't tried the bread you mentioned but will.  Her fave thing for lunch is PB and Peach jam, jelly or butter.  I was thinking about giving her crackers with it but don't think it would be the same.

I would go to the GF section at HEB. I think theirs is the best around here. Shop around and check out what they have. You will be surprised at what products have gone GF. It's way better than in recent years past..Besides the natural things like fruit and veggies, there are mixes, breads, cereals. Fritos, Cheetos and M&M's are GF!! The Chex cereals are all GF. You can make some trail mix out of that and other things..Also google Gluten Free Houston, GREAT website for sharing info and recipes and support! Boars Head lunch meats have GF selections too. 4951

@Okiedokie:

I use to buy Udi's bread at Natural Kitchen in the shopping strip on WLH just before Northpark on the left.
I think Kroger sells it now too. Maybe check the Udis website.

@Okiedokie:
Jason's deli cators to celiac folks. They have Udi's bread. My nephew likes their baked potatoes too.

Also Genghis grill has an allergy grill to prepare your rice dishes on. Just check their website to see what sauces are gF.

@N+T: I didn't know that.  I found out the hard way that IHOP uses pancake batter in their omlettes. My husband has wanted to try Genghis grill since they opened.  He has been great and is willing to go gluten free with us.

@Okiedokie:
I didn't know either, till today. My neighbor can't have onions and garlic and her friend has a wheat allergy and was telling me about their allergy grill. She said it takes a little longer than the regular grill prepared foods but not much longer.

@JJS:
Gluten definition according to Wikipedia

Gluten (from Latin gluten, "glue") is a protein composite found in foods processed from wheat and related grain species, including barley and rye. Gluten gives elasticity to dough, helping it rise and keep its shape and often gives the final product a chewy texture. Gluten may also be found in some cosmetics, hair products, and other dermatological preparations.  Why people are doing a gluten free diet?
Some people have an allergy to wheat and some have Celiac disease
Celiac disease, also known as gluten intolerance, is a genetic disorder that affects at least 1 in 133  Americans. Symptoms of celiac disease can range from the classic features, such as diarrhea, weight loss, and malnutrition, to latent  symptoms such as isolated nutrient deficiencies but no gastrointestinal symptom  Some people have just gone gluten free because it got popular, fad diet thing. Some people feel better on it. But it is not a weight loss diet. Why it got popular I am not sure.

@Okiedokie: this is what my sister said about her sons lunch
He's a picky eater, so this is what we send with him:  Cubed cheese, yogart, apple (sometimes grapes) and gluten-free cookies or chips, Fruitables juice box.  If he would eat a sandwich, I would give him a peanut butter sandwich on Udi's bread.

There is a guy on here that has kids who eat GF maybe he will respond. 4951
