Does anyone know any good German Shepard breeders? My mom is looking for a German Shepard puppy, she is very particular that it is a young puppy since she plans on training it as a police dog.   4951

Is your mom a police officer or does she want the dog to be attack trained? Protection training is very serious and costs in the thousands. You can buy an already PP trained dog but those go for around 20,000. When a dog is PP trained it also becomes major liability and some insurance carriers refuse people who have PP trained dogs. You do not want to get a PP trained dog unless you plan on a dog that will take down someone. What if the dog accidentally gets loose? Major liability and takes a huge amount of control, management, and responsibility.

A well bred GSD will naturally be protective and that generally is enough of a deterrent. 99.9% of the time when people say that want to PP train a dog, they have no idea what that actually entails with the time and money, and they don't follow through with it.

A GSD that is a good candidate for PP training would be one with high drives from working lines. These dogs are not always the easiest to live with if they do not have a job or 3.

Instead of tsking a risky investment in a very expensive and complex dog, I can lend your mom my retriever. His bad breath, drool and violent shows of affection are reslly scary! Emoticon

Send me a private email and I can let you know where to find reputable breeders of german shepherds.  We have owned some of the most highly titled shepherds in the US over the past 33 years.  There is no better protection breed that is why over 90 percent of the world's working dogs is the german shepherd dog.  You can purchase a protection trained dog starting at around $4500.  A protection trained dog is a legal liability and you must keep up his/her training.  The European shepherds are bred for protection and good obedience for proper control so I would suggest that she consider a pup with schutzhund lineage. 4951

Err...dbug, if I was on my desktop I'd counterpoint everything you just said. I also remember when you mentioned that you can find good breeders in the Houston chronicle. To humor you I went down a list of Pomeranian breeders in the chronicle and called them asking about genetic health testing, conformation, lineage, longevity, etc. I posted the sad and pathetic results of my phone calls with the irresponsible breeders. One didn't even know what conformation meant!

List the breeders here, I'd really like to know if they match up with my list of ethical working line breeders...

@xjamiex: She used to be, and she used to train them for other cops as well. She wants to train it as one that attacks  when instructed to and was planning to go back into that line of work again, so basically she wants it for work. The ones shes had in the past were very well trained and never did anything she did not command, Her father also trained police dogs and she grew up with them, there was never one that attacked someone it was not supposed to attack.Also why are so many people being rude about this? She has trained them for this work before and clearly knows what she is getting into.

@hgmag:

You didn't give enough background information, so the "dog people" gave you some solid advice. There are a lot of people that seem to think getting an attack dog is as easy as setting up a security system. Get it "programmed" and it's read to go. 4951

The neighbor behind me used to train police dogs. I know this because the cop that came to my house when I called them on the neighbor told me. I called the cops out because I caught the neighbor's kid messing with my dogs on 3 seperate occasions. Their dogs have busted several boards in the fence from trying to fight my dogs. Apparently he wasn't very successful at his training. LOL! I don't know anything about police dogs or their training. I just know I refuse to pay that much for an animal. One of the many reasons mine are both rescue mutts!! Best of luck to your mom though. I bet that's a really neat field to be in. 4951

I just figured saying it is going to be trained as a police dog was enough information to tell it would be a police dog for police work.  4951

Ok thank you for the info. I'm wondering though why she doesn't know what breeder to go to if she has all this BG and knowledge, even trained the dogs before. Shouldn't she know who to go to? 4951
