Thinking of Buying a house water softener from lowes and installing it myself. Have any of you done this? I am going to have to find where the pipes for the two outside water faucets are so I can hook up after them as soft water kills plants. 4951

From what I can tell it removes the sediment and minerals that make our water hard.  Some have filters for the chlorine also.   It would keep the shower from getting that scum build up.  The wife says it will make our detergents work better, our clothes cleaner, her hair softer (due to no mineral build up), and we won't need a water filter for our drinking water anymore.  However it is an investment that you don't get much back on.  4951

The units themselves are fairly inexpensive, it's the install that'll bite ya......... 4951

Yeah the install is really pricey.  A few years ago we got some guy that came out and it was 1500 or 2500 for the unit and install. Can't remember exactly the price kept bouncing around. lol.   Units really vary on price.   Good one probably start at 500.00 4951

You need to look at your square footage, how many people in the house, and have your water tested first......That'll determine what size you will need 4951

I actually heard i all seriousness that some report came out recently that the water in Atascocita was getting pretty bad... Don't know the validity of it just something I heard in conversation.. 4951

Those salesmen are straight up con artists. I've never had a problem with my regular water so there's no way I'd drop a few grand on a special water system. My next door neighbors broke after 2 years & hasn't been fixed because of how expensive it is to fix. Good luck finding what works for you though. 4951

Since we are in a newer home everything is already set up for a water softener for us. We've been seriously considering. I am so dang tired of having to squeegee the shower everytime I shower!! 4951

Water softeners are more complicated than you think. Certainly the ones you buy from Home Depot and Lowes will do a job for about 4 years (based on water usage), and certainly they are easy enough to install. However, they are small units that no one works on. If the valve goes out in two years, then you're back to buying another water softener. If you buy from a commercial seller you will get a better quality product that will last longer (resign usually last upwards of 7 years), and most have a lifetime guarantee on the tanks. Do not pay more than around $2K for a salt system or $2,500 for a saltless system - and that should include the installation. 4951
