Mitt Romney lashed back at Harry Reid on Thursday in an interview with Fox News' Sean Hannity, saying the Senate majority leader needs to "put up or shut up" after airing allegations about Romney's taxes.Reid, a Nevada Democrat, first raised eyebrows Tuesday by saying in a news interview that someone had told him Romney went 10 years without paying taxes. He would only identify his source as an investor in Romney's former venture capital firm, Bain Capital, and he acknowledged, "I'm not certain" it's true. That didn't stop Reid from taking to the Senate floor Thursday to accuse the Republican presidential candidate again of paying no taxes, part of a broader Democratic attack on Romney for declining to release more than two years of tax documents. 4951

Never vote for a Democrat?   That sounds like a very unwise attitude.  What if their platform were amended so that it more fits your own views?   What if the Republican Party stops supporting your viewpoints?   Shouldn't you at least pick a side of the political spectrum rather than a political party? This is the problem with politics today.  There is too much of the  "I don't like those Democrats/Republicans/Progressives/ Libertarians/Tea Party/Occupy Wall St " attitudes.   You should determine how you think various issues should be handled, and then research which party/person best reflects your own views.  If you blindly support (or oppose) something simply because of the person it comes from, your being irrational and hurting everyone.  The country would be much better off if people educated themselves (not that you're not an educated person) about the issues that they care about and find out what is being done by whom.  This is not just a problem with regular people like you and me.  This is what is going on in Washington.  There is an over emphasis on where something comes from rather than the merits of that something.  I would vote for a Democrat in the office.  I would vote for a Republican.  I don't care what label goes where, I just want people who will get something done and improve upon existing legislation.   4951

This is no "what if" game; this is a real life scenario.  Political parties DO change.  They shift from being conservative to liberal based on the time period.  The Democrats used to be the party of the South.  They were the conservative party, and the Republicans weren't.  Your loyalty to the party is not rational.  We live in a dynamic world and I don't think it's wise to side with institutions rather than ideals.  I have no problem with you supporting the Republican Party and strongly disliking the Democrats, but support the principles they stand for, not the label.  Just a thought, next time you hear a political idea you dislike, take a minute to think why you dislike it so much.  Judge ideas based on merit, that's all I'm saying. 4951

Real life? You asked 2 questions and both started with "What if...".

That's a what if game.

Should they change their stance on issues, it's more than likely because the American views have gotten so far left that sliding a little towards the middle we know today will be far right of tomorrow.

But, for the sake of argument...

What if the democrat party were to somehow gain morals and ethics?

Yeah, I'm not worried about that what if. 4951

Well Fofa, that's a bit of a stretch...sure. I'm just so tired of all the talk these days. I've made up my mind in this election anyway.

I've voted for some democrats in the past and might again. Just not this election. Hell...I may only give 1 vote to 1 person only. 4951

Well you got me there, Jax.  My questions did start with "What if".  But I didn't really think they were too absurd.  It's interesting that you should say that politics has moved left...I was just recently thinking that politics was moving to the right.  It seems like more recently there have been more reactionary right wing ideas than I've seen of radical left wing ideas.  Although, I suppose Obamacare is pretty left for the US.  Maybe the conservative side is just louder.  They certainly seem to speak more about the issues.  Maybe it's just too much Jon Stewart. @TheDude: any example of it moving right?
Obamacare = way left
Dodd/Frank = left
$800 billion stimulous = left
End of don't ask don't tell = left
Justice department not defending DOMA = left
Justice department not proscuting Black Panther polling intimidation = left
More people applying for SSI disability than finding jobs = left
Government taking over GM, restructuring it to give the majority of it to the unions while leaving shareholder with nothing = left
$7,500 tax credit to buy a Chevy Volt = left
Class warfare in raising taxes on " the rich" in the name of "fairness" = left

There is more, but you get the point.

Some examples:   Deregulation of the financial market that led to the recession in 2008 = right  Legislation to deny rights to homosexuals = right  Legislation to deny women access to contraceptives and abortion servies = right  Legislation that defines pregnancy beginning before sex = right  Refusal to allow tax cuts for the rich to expire, further harming the economy = right  Trickle down economics destroying the middle class = right  Attempting to force a unique brand of Christian morality on the entire population = right  Wrecking the economy with Supply-Side Economics = right  I hope you see that this is an ineffective way to discuss anything.  On a side note, I take issue with a few things you label "left" (and I'm sure you'll feel the same about some things I've labeled).  People getting disability instead of jobs is not an idea of people on the left.  The idea is to help people who are genuinely disabled in some way.  Freeloaders aren't meant to be helped, but it is almost unavoidable to help some.  That said, some method of improvement could improve the system.   Not prosecuting voter intimidation is also not a left idea.  Not prosecuting people deserving of prosecution is pretty much universally despised.  Some of the things you said I will claim as ideas from the left though.  Dodd-Frank, Obamacare, ending DADT and not defending DOMA, tax incentives for cleaner energy (perhaps more efficiently aimed at power sources), and raising taxes on the wealthier Americans.  These are liberal ideas and, I think, they're good ones.  Either way, ideally the left and right should work together to improve the country.   4951
