In 2007, Congress voted to increase the minimum wage each year for three years, but the rate has not moved higher after hitting $7.25 an hour in 2009.Baker notes that the minimum wage has not kept up with inflation. According to his estimates, the minimum wage in 1968 would be nearly $9 in today's dollars."A minimum wage of $10 an hour would be a big step in the right direction," Baker writes. That equates to an annual salary just over $20,000.Nearly 10 million workers currently earn the federal minimum wage and 40 percent of them have children to support, according to Baker.Congress is considering a bill to raise the minimum wage to $9.80 an hour over the next three years. 4951

Until our workers stop whining we won't regain our manufacturing sector.  Every time a company outsources a job to a developing country, it's not because they are unpatriotic.  It's because those poor workers are willing to make those IPhones at $1/hour with no health benefits or pension plan, whereas an American will want at least $15/hour with health benefits and a pension and all that other overhead crap. How can we blame companies for sending jobs overseas?  They are pursuing their only obligation, which is to make profit.  Anything less is socialism.  Indeed a mandatory minimum wage law is inherently antithetical to capitalism.  Sad that so few Republicans these days want to touch it.  Not refusing to raise it--*abolishing* it altogether... but I suppose socialism lives in all sorts of places now. 4951

Well I work for 13 an hour and I don't get no benefits with it. I'm a commercial roofer with a family and I think it's wrong to send work over seas. That's what's wrong with our country now. To worried about helping everyone else and not taking care of our own 4951

Every time a company outsources a job to a developing country, it's not
because they are unpatriotic.  It's because those poor workers are
willing to make those IPhones at $1/hour with no health benefits or
pension plan,I don't think workers are exactly whining as you put it...............I believe that we all just want a level playing field. Look, we know that things like OSHA, the EPA, workers rights, IE unions are basically non-existent in developing countries. So yeah...... it's cheaper for say Boeing to have China manufacture parts for the 787 than the US to do it. Tell ya' what though...... seems China can't even get things like toothpaste, dog food, and safe toys for kids right, how can we expect them to build high value safety sensitive parts for airplanes? Since we are on the subject of pay........... Quite frankly I'm sick & tired of guys in suits who know NOTHING about the aviation business telling me I make too much money.  So the next time you board a 777 bound for China and  your comfortably sitting in that business class seat waiting 2 hours at the gate with 230 other angry  passengers because there is a problem with the autopilot and the plane can't go until it's fixed.... maybe someone should call a tech from China or India & have them come over & fix it because it costs so much for someone from the US to do it. Thank God my company does not feel this way..... they pay their technicians what we are worth! 4951

So the solution is to require companies who would like to legally outsource to cheaper countries to instead remain here and be forced to hire Americans.  To me, that sounds like punishing companies for merely pursuing profit.  It sounds a lot like socialism. Outsourcing is the natural outcome of capitalism.  Companies have no borders.  Their only obligation is to make money.  They can go where ever they want to maximize profit.    It wouldn't be a problem if Americans could compete with workers in other countries.  Then, every company would want to come to America and hire our citizens to build things.  Why do you think everything we use--phones, computers, furniture, appliances--is made in Asia?  4951

It's cheaper to make electronics, furniture, and all that plastic stuff we buy at Walmart because countries in Asia don't have all those pesky regulations regulations to follow like the USA or the EU. Funny thing though....Germany, which is a bit smaller than the size of  TX & has twice the amount of regulations than we do, pays it's workers a decent wage & has a trade surplus with China. How can that be? 4951

I agree with you on companies should be allowed to go where they want. What I don't agree with however is they should not be allowed to keep their corporate office in the US if the majority of their business is overseas. They want the protection and safety of our government but don't want to pay for it in full. It's the classic example of don't eat where you crap. Now though the greed has gotten so far out of control that they are starting to find out that the US is turning into a crapper itself. There needs to be a balance.   4951

I feel that a national minimum wage is the cause of so much outsourcing of jobs, and that raising it would just encourage more companies to seek out workers elsewhere. 4951

I don't think it would be good to raise it.   If you want a better paying job you should work hard for it.  4951

@Zephard: You should have to work for a better paying job, but the minimum wage hasn't kept up with inflation and the real minimum wage today is less than the real minimum wage of the 1960's.  It should be increased to keep up with the times.   The world is a dynamic place and the laws and lawmakers have to keep that in mind.
