I am so bummed. I saw a dead mama possum in the middle of the road with her tiny baby. They were both run over, I was so upset. She was probably out looking for something to eat and got hit. I looked around to see if I could see any more babies, but I didn't see any. The baby was probably a couple weeks old. 4951

Oh I am so sorry GG, at least it died peacefully and not in the wet grass. Spring is tough on wildlife living in populated areas, too many cars, cats & dogs Emoticon 4951

That's terrible. You know if you ever find injured wildlife, there is a place next to the SPCA that takes them. If the injury is severe, the 24 emergency clinic for dogs & cats @ Deerbrook will put them to sleep for free. They as for a small donation, but if u can't make one they still accept the animal. 4951

it's natures way of controling the animal population , if none of the wild life never died we would be over run  in just a few months. Just like with people , everyone & everything  has a time to die ...that's life...sad but true.... 4951

Getting hit by a car is not a natural way for wildlife to die. Natures way is being killed by a predator or setting sick and dying in the wild. I agree, there's alot of possums, however they only live around 2 years in the wild, they have a very short lifespan compared to other wildlife. I just have a soft spot for them. They are our only marsupial, they don't carry rabies......and poor things they are so darn ugly, but they are unassuming and very docile for the most part. They are opportunistic when feeding, they eat all kinds of pest including those big roaches. They will eat carrion (road kill) and all.sorts of unpleasant things. I just love em! 4951

Yes, it's horrible.... but so is nature.  Animals have been getting run over since man started using wheels.  I don't get weepy every time I see a dead animal on the side of the road.  Besides, I don't hear anyone feeling so bad that they are giving up using vehicles.  It's life, it's death, it happens. 4951

@pharlap: If you think that it's sad that she had a baby on her, I guess I'll send you into a crying jag.  Opossums are marsupials.  The females keep their babies in a pouch.  So she probably had her entire brood (except for the one) in her pouch.  If the impact didn't kill the brood, then they died from starvation. As I said before, yes it's sad, but it's nature.
