March 5, 2012 -- Lab tests commissioned by a consumer group find that popular colas -- including Coke and Pepsi -- carry a caramel-coloring chemical that causes cancer in lab animals. The chemical, 4-methylimidazole or 4-MI, comes from the sodas' caramel coloring. That color is made not from natural caramel but via a chemical process involving ammonia. While toxicology studies show that 4-MI can cause cancer in lab animals, it's not clear whether it's a human carcinogen -- or whether the amounts detected in sodas pose any kind of a threat. 4951

That coloring is one of the ingredients I have to be careful with on my kid.....her body rejects caramel 4-MI coloring.  She will get loose poopies and cranky to outright mean when she has too much of it...dyes will also do this to her.I cant eat as healthy as I would like as the healthy stuff cost 3 times what other stuff cost but Ted Nugent said in one interview(I believe it was him, was a while back) something that I believe to be 100% true.....If you cant read the ingredient  with ease or without stuttering its a sure bet it shouldn't go into your body. In this case, Im saying its a sure bet we should stay away from 4-methylimidazole....no label should take the whole side of the container listing these hard to say ingredients either....:-/ 4951

eating healthy does not mean you have to go to Wonder Mart and pay dearly. It does not even mean you have to by organic.Usually just NOT buying premade stuff, like Mac & Cheese, Pot Pies, TV dinners, etc.But fresh or frozen (no sauce) veggies.Start easy, say once a week salad night. 4951

I gave up drinking soda years ago, even then it was only casually. But to this day, when I'm sick, I crave Coke.      4951

Uh oh, then I am screws cause I drink a coke every day. Why do these companies put coloring in our food? Why don't they just skip it and let us eat or drink it in their natural color. 4951

They have decided colas should be brown, the 7-up type sodas, clear. Eh, one won't hurt you probably. Everyone has a little vice here and there. 4951

@TheTruthHurts -- Didn't they try doing a clear coke or pepsi at one point? I think they pulled it pretty quick, though.
I think you're right...maybe it was Pepsi. Well dang em, after they condition the entire population for years  that colas are dark, they go and try and change it. Emoticon 4951

Studies have proven sales drop dramatically when color is removed from the product and its packaging but what they can do is use natural colors, Just about every color out there can be produced naturally. I buy yummy earth candy  yummyearth.com/ for my kid and its very colorful and tatse great, she will pick one of their lolly pops up before any other candy and it actually has vitamins in it because they use real fruit juice to color it.  Ocean spray makes a fruit snack that is just as colorful and yummy as fruit roll up brands. The list goes on and on with products that taste just as good and they use carrot juice, beets pomegranate etc to color the stuff and its good!!! But cost you twice as much.

I rarely drink soda these days. Too much sugar in a regular one and I don't want to put the artificial sweeteners in my body with the diet stuff.

When I make a trip to whole foods they have soda with Stevia in it. I will usually buy one of those. The root bear is good. 4951
