After every street flood, we see floods of another sort: plastics littering our shorelines. Here's how they get there and a simple way to stop these "secondary" floods.

sad state of affairs to see all the trash on shore banks. Hope the city and others come up with system to catch all that so it does not get into the rivers, lakes and ocean.. Thanks Bob for great article and all the other you have done
there is so much that runs into storm drains as well. Just after the rain on Sunday I swept up piles of dead pin oak leaves the were ready to go into the drains. Sure they will probably decompose but add all the other stuff on street curbs that runs to the drain.. big mess. we need to be more pro active here as well.
How about the people not being pigs and put trash in trash cans.
Forty years ago we were walking down Broadway in NYC and I bent over, put my cigarette out and held the butt. My friend said, just throw it down, everyone does. I replied, no I'll hold it and put it in a trash can. There are at least three or four in a block. Then I turned to her and said, instead of me being like everyone else, maybe they should be like me. Some lady behind us said thank you for giving a ****. We lol.
I will say texass trash stretches across the state. Thought we'd run the coast and went to sea rim state park, omg the filth. Drive across and the whole place is a trash bin. Slide into New Mexico and it gets 90% better immediately. Slide into Arizona and there is none. You can always tell who the slobs are when traveling too. They are the ones who think free breakfast comes with bussing service, they trash their rooms and treat their hosts like crap. I've actually gone out and picked up trash. When the hotel manager saw me she told me next time she'll get someone to do it. I told her, if I had seen them, I would have said, excuse me, this is my home, pick your **** up.
icare reacted It does not matter lol. How do we know if the higher ups don't just dump rubbish all over the ocean on purpose. When people put their recycling bens out it usually goes with the regular rubbish as they pick it up. Some are separating and cleaning bottles/cans for nothing. It is a huge joke.
They do. However my sister came for a visit and asked me if I thought she was a garbagy person? I asked her what she meant? At the time texass or kingwood didn't offer a recycling option and our town did and it was her third trip to empty my small can into the big one. I told her not really because one, I don't buy all those kids treats in boxes, wraps, plastic. Two, our town picks up both recycling and trash two days a week so I never have a lot of trash for two people. Three, I try very hard to recycle or reuse all my glass jars, etc. I now have valet service and they pick up five days a week at my door and I very seldom have a whole bag. Even an onion bag is reusable. You can cut it, roll it, and use as a pot scrubber etc. I cook from scratch, bake treats at home, and very rarely by anything in plastic, boxes, or wrappers. I store stuff in those jars. I always use a trash can, or carry what I do make while out until I can properly dispose of it.
It's individual choice on the footprint that you leave. I love nature and our beautiful earth and would never think of disrespecting her.
As I said, planned on running the texass coast but the filth didn't bring me joy, so we abandoned the idea. Oh and I don't buy new cheap ****. Lol I'm still using things from over 30 years ago and I take care of it.
I did that once and forgot to flick the butt out all the way. Was an interesting night for sure.
When walking the greenbelt trails I noticed that people discarded their cans, water bottles, etc. in areas where there were lots of trees for cover, but in the open areas I would seldom see any trash. I concluded that people knew it was wrong to litter, but if no one could see them do it, then they could get away with it. Sad because there was a trash can not too many yards away.
