HoustonISD's wake-up call

Unfortunately, they are going about it wrong. Instead of hiring marketing firms, they should invest that money into the people and students at those schools. They are losing students to better options because they aren't taking care of the basics. Marketing will not help if people don't like what they see. Improve the schools, invest in quality staff and teachers, improve technology. How can they be so "smart" and so ignorant at the same time?

It's all so odd to me. Are they a business or a school? If they are a business, their client is the government I guess? Bc the taxpayers have that money taken and then they get some from the government and then there is suppose to be an end result of an educated child. We don't seem to have anything to say about it.

They take the money, make the rules, set up their systems and then fail. If they were a business, there would be a " going out of business " sign on the door. Instead of honest evaluation and reorganization, they hire a PR firm?
This is the new world of ZERO accountability we live in now.

donnatella : You are right! Parents want to see their kids are getting a great education. They don't want money spent on marketing firms.

MissAmericanPie : I blame our own education system which includes our state and local government. The "school choice" program has turned our school systems into a business leaving them to fend for themselves how to keep and maintain funding.

More Than 100,000 Students Apply for Texas Education Freedom Accounts
The record-setting demand for school choice in Texas hit a new milestone this weekend. More than 100,000 students have applied for Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA) in less than two weeks.

olemiss1968 : They need to decide WHAT they are, and then be it. At this point, they are failing. Nobody says it, except the parents who see the failure in their tests and grades.

The schools are to blame. It's that simple. The only way out of a hole is to realize you are in one. Then figure a way out. If you always do what you've always done, then you'll always get what you always got.

Schools have turned into glorified day care. Bad attitudes in kids abound. I know more than one teacher who have left the school systems bc PARENTS don't support teachers or comply with discipline making their job intolerable.

MissAmericanPie : I'm sorry but I completely disagree. I think you are using a very general argument used often by those of pro-charter programs.

Well, you are allowed lol. But consider this. We spend more money on education than anyone, even much less prosperous countries, and they all have better education systems and better educated kids. So money as an excuse no longer has legs.

And, I'm not even advocating for charter schools. I'm purely talking about accountability here. That's the only place to start, is it not?? Why is the left so opposed to accountability? I don't get that but the longer I live, it's obvious they are lost bc they refuse to accept accountability in their world view.

MissAmericanPie : How is this a "left" issue? Education issues varies by district, not by political party.

olemiss1968 : I mean the schools have a tendency to not accept responsibility in a way that results in going another path. And I was referring to why you blame the government instead of where responsibility lies, with the school districts and their policies. You blame the state and local governments? Not that they don't contribute money but they don't make policies and tests and control literacy.

So true! They need to focus on what is important--the kids and them getting a good education. Maybe they should look at WHY so many people are leaving the district!

Weathergirl5 : Exactly! School choice and home schooling have been great tools to force them to see what's not working. Follow the exiting students…

Weathergirl5 : The first thing they should do is split Houston ISD into at least two separate districts. It is almost 4 times the size of Humble ISD. I'm sure it is much more difficult to manage any school district that size. That should be the first consideration.
