Seven students from Humble ISD were awarded over $1 million in scholarships from the U.S. Army Strategic Officer Recruiting Detachment (SORD). Dr. Elizabeth Fagen, Humble ISD Superintendent of Schools (center), was the keynote speaker at the scholarship ceremony. Humble ISD students received more U.S. Army Strategic Officer Recruiting Detachment (SORD) scholarships than any other school district in the Houston area. Out of 22 scholarships offered, seven were awarded to students from four Humble ISD High Schools. The scholarships awarded to Humble ISD students totaled $1,064,770

“In Humble ISD, we aspire to support every single one of our nearly 50,000 students in achieving their dreams,” Dr. Elizabeth Fagen, Humble ISD Superintendent, said as the keynote speaker for the event. “The military is one of those areas that we really want to encourage students to explore and understand the value of.”

Considering that nearly one-third of the Houston and surrounding area scholarship recipients came from Humble ISD is a testament to the district’s dedication to the College, Career, and Military Readiness (CCMR) – an initiative that focuses on providing resources, support and opportunities for students to explore various pathways and achieve success beyond high school.

“In Humble ISD we start having conversations with pre-K students because we want them to be proud of who they are, what they can do, what they can bring to the table, and how they can form a team of their friends, not based on who they are really comfortable with, but based on who is different than them so that together they can be stronger,” Dr. Fagen said. “And then as they get older, they have the opportunity to explore careers that match up with the strengths and the things that they love.”

SORD helps students create a pathway to a strong future and service to the nation utilizing a college first approach through the Army Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) – the largest officer-producing organization within the American military. Two, three and four year scholarships are available and include a monthly stipend and textbook allowance. Students commit to an eight-year service commitment with the U.S. Army and enter their service as an officer.

The students from Humble ISD awarded scholarships are: Haley Alexander, Summer Creek High School; David Bell, Kingwood High School; Hayden Bender, Kingwood Park High School; Gael Campos, Humble High School; Le’Shawnice Jones, Humble High School, Alexis Lopez, Humble High School; and Victoria Perez, Kingwood High School.

McCauley : Thank you yes very proud. He is a good kid he wanted to go to this private Ivy league school to play football. We knew we couldn't pay for it. & they do not give out scholarships for football yah us lol. So he found a way to pay for it. It's A Minuteman scholarship. Army ROTC Reserve. He will get his 4 year tuition paid for which is $60k a year for Davidson College in NC.

Fluffycakes2 : Will he play football there? That's a great scholarship!

sweetie : Yes he will pay football there. He is there now for a week football camp. We take him back August 2 for him to stay up there they go a month early before school starts. All my vacation money is now Going towards this lol. But tuition & fees are paid for. I still have to pay half of room & Board & the meal plan. But he is getting great benefits plus getting paid a little bit monthly.

Fluffycakes2 : Omg!! Is he already in college??? I remember when the girls were after him lol I'm sure they still are. I cannot believe he's already going into college or does he have another year of high school

sweetie : Nope he graduated this year. It's been a crazy ride. He is there now for football camp this week. We love Davidson NC we are thinking of moving when daughter graduates. But not sure of anything yet. She wants to join Air Force now for the fire crew. But yes he got a huge scholarship for this school. He has done so much on his own to make this happen we just aware the backup to make sure it gets done very proud of him. The girls are after him but he is more focused on making sure all this gets done right now for football. He only talks to 1 girl right now that we love her but they are just friends bc they are both going away. This is been an emotional journey for sure. Don't know how y'all all do this sending your kids out into the world. But I know we give them direction & send them on their way. Many prayers are said lol. Daughter w I'll be a senior this year so back to back crazy

Fluffycakes2 : He's so cute! I cannot believe your daughter is going to be a senior. Where does time go. Congratulations to him. And congratulations to you and your husband you two raised two great kids. That's not easy to do in these days. ❤️❤️ Can't wait to see him play for the college. You'll need to Put him in his jersey as your avatar when he starts playing football
