People wanted succession because of the Obama presidency and linking us to his socialist agenda. 4951

@CBP210:

They wanted to be self sufficient.

And isnt using federal $ to pay for cleanup a socialist agenda?

Or is this different because it affects locally?

@Stealth83: It depends on who you ask but I would say no as it would be considered humanitarian effort no different than sending money overseas for natural disaster relief.

Prior to the latest Presidential election there was a lot of posts here babbling about secession.

Still want it or are you enjoying FEMA paying for cleanup?

@Stealth83: The whole secessionist nonsense was started by the uninformed for the uninformed.  First of all the very thing that most people love about Texas is its lack of an income tax.  If it were an independent country one of the first things it would have to do is impose said tax to support itself, and most likely a very significant one at that.  It would also have to raise its own armed forces in significant numbers which would immediately be surrounded by the "enemy" forces of the United States.Secondly as you allude to, Texas would be quite ill prepared to spend billions of dollars in disaster recovery from hurricanes which will surely come as recent events attest.  There would be no more United States to rely upon.  At the end of the day no matter the denials, most of it was an irrational reaction to having a person of color in the Oval Office.  It was an attitude of if this is where the U.S. is headed we'd just assume form our on country.  Yeah, good luck with that.  4951

As much as Secession talks stir folks up and the immediate response is "Yes".

When you think it through, it had many drawbacks. The disaster funds are just a piece of it.
There is the highway funds, police, fire and ems grants, education funds, agricultural grants, and a whole lot more.

While I think the Feds have about 3x more employees than they need, it would cost us thousands of jobs.

We would lose several military bases and federal prisons and the list can go on and on and on.

While Texas is one of the few states that could be self sufficient, folks would not like the tax rate we would be at to be that way.

I don't see many folks turning down DSNAP, though it is state managed, it is federally funded. 4951

@rocketwhile I agree with most of what you said - I do disagree with this statement: most of it was an irrational reaction to having a person of color in the Oval Office.  I think it was more politics/policy than color.  if color was the driving force, then what is california's reason to secede?  trump too white? 4951

The humanitarian aspect could be defended to get through the first few weeks - preservation of life and property. Rebuilding, improvements, should be personal responsibility or private donations. But Abbott is complaining Washington isn’t doing enough for TX. It will be interesting to see how much red state TX gets to rebuild compared to PR, which can’t vote.

I am no secessionist, but come on.  If Texas was its own country, instead of residents paying federal income tax, they would simply pay state income tax to cover things that the feds cover today.  Not one penny different, so no impact to residents.  If the average Texan pays 20% of their income to the Feds now, that is a lot of money to pay for hurricane or other disaster relief.  4951

@rocket:

Last night they were talking about the Jacksonville pier still destroyed by Mathew last year and what Irma tore up. That Fema hasn't released the promised money.
My dh asked, why don't they fix it and then submit for reimbursement?
The city, county, and state do not have the funds to fix it and wait. They fenced and padlocked many areas you used to be able to enjoy on the shore and St. Johns river.

As soon as the election was over, I had several people say to me, time to go.   LOL  I did read a article, a while back, about how gun sales were up in Austin, while down around the rest of the state.  The people being interviewed were talking about secession.  They were all Democrats.  The tables have turned I guess.    4951

I would like to see the States break up. Have a common ground to defend each other and put Washington out of buisness.

Face it people think differently in different states than each other. Just because you think it does not have to be the law of the land.

Eg. the time change stupid crap 4951

There are a lot of qualified people of color that could be good presidential material. Hussein wasn't one of them and he proved it. The fact is the opposite; he was elected the first time because he was "of color", not because he was qualified. Only a few know how he got in the second time.
Same as women. There are a lot of qualified women, Billary isn't one if them.
FEMA pay for a tourist attraction? Shouldn't happen. That isn't an "Emergency."
And, if we shook off all the leaches, this fish could swim even better... 4951
