When I was a kid, I spent a lot of time at the Boy's Club down my street. We played basketball, ping-pong, billiards and even chess. We had wood shop classes, and the old guy at the wood shop even showed us the basics of electricity and plumbing. There were sports teams for us to join, or we'd hang around the front room and trade baseball cards, play Pac Man or pinball. The building smelled horribly of sweat. And no girls were allowed in there except one special occasion. Even your mom couldn't go past the front desk area to pick you up. And it was fine. A mile away was a girl's club, and I had no clue what they did in there, and I didn't give a damn, because it probably involved yucky girl stuff. And it was fine. They probably didn't want us in their club anyway. So each year there was a Spring Dance and all the girls came to the boys club and we tolerated them in our building and they tolerated our sweaty socks aroma and we danced and drank punch and then the next day we went back to telling them to get out of our club. There is nothing wrong with separating boys and girls in to group activities. There's also nothing wrong with joining them. But why take a very old institution that isn't hurting anything, and change its very nature? 4951

Girls trying to push their way into sports and organizations for boys is just crazy extreme activist BS. Some people are just looking for a fight just for the sake of fighting. This crazy agenda is just too much, and it serves no purpose at all. 4951

@SwimSwim: Not every piece of traditional American life has to be “fixed” and eff’d up by them. They seem hell-bent on dismantling all of the traditional values and institutions most Americans hold dear.

I've had children in both organizations.  My boys were in Boy Scouts a few years before my girl became a Girl Scout.  From my experience, I can tell you I liked Boy Scouts much better than the Girl Scouts.  The program for the boys was much more organized and structured.  The meeting with the girls was more of "what do you want to do today?" and not really structured.  I don't think you should ask a 6 year old to run the show because they need guidance. Girl Scouts was not the same program I experienced as a girl.I don't know the details of how it will all work but I think that they were going to separate the boys and girls in different dens. 4951

If they had the experience we had with Girl Scouts, they wouldn't want to! 4951

My understanding is they will be separate from the boys. As long as it doesn’t negatively impact the boys I don’t see the problem with offering the same program to girls. I think the headline is causing more reaction than anything else. 4951
