Anyone know why the 59 bridge has a load limit? It's at 80,000 lbs so larger loads, but makes we wonder if there is damage related to Harvey. 4951

@Katzen:

Never noticed a sign? Is it a new sign?

  Since that is a fairly long bridge...   and most "cars" weigh 3,000 pounds? (if I remember right?)... then you get several fully loaded 18 wheelers on there... This does not make me feel good! A lot of cars/trucks/18 wheelers can fit on there at one time... 4951

@Traveler500:

The 80,000 is not based on the entire bridge. It is for a typical span of an 18 wheeler. You could pack it solid with trucks and it will be safe. And there is always a huge safety cushion built in. 4951

Anything over 80000 lbs requires a permit. My guess is that there was a sign there and the flooded river knocked it down. Once they install another the digital sign should come down. ...Let's you know how effective the original sign was in the first place.

Article in today's Chronicle states they had to "lighten the load".  "The main part of the waterway channel has shifted and material scoured out around the bridge foundations.  After analyzing the foundations load carrying capacity it was determined the bridge needed to be limited"  It goes on to say it is a preventative measure until repairs can be made.

@Andreweggplant: I wonder when these repairs will actually be made.

Up to 80,000# is legal total weight for the tractor, trailer and the load. so it's probably a reminder. Like others have noted. 4951

Up to 80,000

There can be heavier loads with a permit so since there is KNOWN/DOCUMENTED damage to the bridge they want to take no chances... per the article...
