I have a DJI Phantom 3 Advanced and  have enjoyed learning to use it but did not enjoy having to get it repaired after a bad crash! DJI is pretty much has cornered the market and makes very good products. That being said, I think I will move up to the new DJI Mavic. Much smaller and  better built. Also the DJI Spark mini drone is a good starting point for a beginner. DJI also offers insurance that you purchase up front, it is well worth the cost and if I upgrade I will get it this time around.

@Chrisinkingwood:  I knew that of all of the KDCers, you, @Ray and or @FoFa would have one.

I have a DJI Mavic Pro. It excels as a stable, portable, photography/cinematography platform. Please note that this is not a toy - it is an aircraft subject to FAA rules and regulations. During the recent disaster, most of Houston, including Kingwood, was under temporary flight restrictions. As Kingwood is under 5 miles from and airport, restrictions are always in place and you have to jump through a few hoops to get FAA approval to fly. If you don't follow the FAA rules, you're subject to serious fines (not to mention confiscation of your aircraft).  The Mavic  is designed to provide high portability without sacrificing function. It folds up to the size of a large water bottle and fits inside a backpack. I get 21 - 25 minutes of flight time (per battery) and can charge a depleted battery in the supplied car charger while I use the other two. The aircraft offers the ability to use programmed flight paths so that one can concentrate on actual photography. It has auto takeoff and landing features (recognizing and landing within a meter of the original launch point). There are sensors front, side, and below to help avoid collisions with trees and buildings. It also sports 3 GPS sensors for close triangulation. Max altitude is 5000 meters (16404 feet) and operational distance is 13 Km (8 miles).  Max speed is 40 mph (in sport mode). The manufacturer states that 22 mph is the maximum sustained wind speed capability, but I have had it up in 30 mph winds where it functioned well, although it was "iffy" when landing. The C4K camera is mounted on a 3 axis mechanical gimbal and supports true ISO ranges from100 - 3200 ( video ) 100 - 1600 ( photo ). The DJI "Mavic Pro Fly More" package contains the drone, controller, 64 GB SD card, three "intelligent" batteries, a backpack, and extra propellers. You will have to have a smart phone to use all the features. I use an iPhone 7 Plus and find it perfect for the task.   This drone is a bridge between advanced "hobbiest" and "professional" drone categories. Quite a few pros have purchased them for assignments where the low weight, size, and portability are a plus. Good luck! 4951
