So I was out demo'ing a house on Saturday.  I wound up having a disagreement with a crow bar, (it won).  The only cleaning agent we could get our hands on was alcohol.  I poured the alcohol on it.  Within an hour, I was in the ER not able to talk through the pain. Unfortunately my wound was only red at that time.  They sent me home with Keflex and Tyler #3.  I woke up Sunday am and my leg looked like the 2nd picture.  I spoke with a doctor, we assumed it was a chemical reaction with the alcohol and something that was on my leg, more than likely fiberglass from the sheet rock I had been pulling out.  Today I spiked a fever and wound up back in the ER.  I saw a burn doctor and was told i suffered mostly 2nd degree burns but more than likely 3rd degree burns under the blisters.  But, that couldn't be confirmed as the blisters were covering up those areas.  The doctor is pretty certain that there was something in the bottle besides alcohol.  The gentleman is a 85 year who lives alone wife passed away in 2006, with no family here, so it was unknown if there could potentially have been something else in the bottle.  The doctor gave me an injection of Rocephin, treated the wound, wrapped it and sent me on my way.  It is unknown at this point if I will need to see a plastic surgeon for the scars.  Please if you are out there working wear boots and masks!!!!

I am so sorry!   So many people doing whatever it takes for their neighbor and yes, putting themselves in harm's way.  My son suffered an injury helping people out of boats.  Fortunately, just needed stitches.  But everyone needs to heed your warning and to be careful.   I also have concerns about the number of people working without any kind of mask protecting them from all the dust and whatever else in the debris.  That looks really painful.  I hope you heal soon.

@teatime:
Were the stiches on the shin area? Some of the boats had things at the back under the water you could not see until you kicked with shin.

Just hang in there; our bodies have an amazing ability to recover.  I was clearing brush one day and got something that in half a day looked like it was eating my arm; lasted for over a month and scared the hell out of me. Total recovery not even a scar. Just take care of "all of you" and let the body and the medicine do their thing.  4951

Yikes! I am sorry to hear/see that. For those working or allowing their loved ones to work in homes, I know it's hot but please :

• wear long sleeves and jeans
• wear work boots and not sneakers
• use/wear eye protection
• wear latex gloves under your heavy leather work gloves.
• wear a proper mask (not a cheap painters mask but a resperator mask)
• launder your work clothes separately from normal laundry. And run your machine free of clothes (only bleach and water) after laundering work clothes, always use highest water temperature.
• wash your hands throughly before eating anything
• don't keep food you plan to consume in the homes or near debris
• don't drink from open containers and don't keep drinks inside the home or near debris (best to chug a bottle of water and toss it than be opening and closing the bottle).
• try to avoid touching your face, eyes, mouth, or other sensitive "bits" until you have fully cleaned your hands.
• be sure to regularly and fully bleach your shower/tub

If anyone thinks of more, please add! 4951

That looks awful...scary!!

Did you by chance keep the bottle from the alcohol you poured on it? Maybe could get it tested.

Hope you heal fast! 4951
