I'm going to create a new thread here to separate this information from the KHS/Summer Creek discussion.First, a couple of things about myself. I was a public school teacher for about 12 years and then trained teachers for one of the biggest districts in the Phoenix area. I homeschooled my own kids from kindergarten through senior year. Don't think that being a certified teacher automatically made me a great homeschool mom, because some of the best homeschool moms I've ever known had only a high school education. Totally against the public school mindset, I know, but it's true, and as a trainer, I visited hundreds of classrooms and saw some of the worst examples of teaching, ever. And this was in suburban Phoenix, nice neighborhoods, etc. So, on to high school and homeschooling. There are more resources out there than you could ever imagine, from online classes, to local co-ops, the possibility of doing dual credit classes with Lone Star (those will be online for a while), Texas Virtual Academy (an online public school), and outstanding curriculum. Plus, if a kid manages his/her school efficiently, they'll have time for a part-time job, hobbies, and even sports.We used the Ambleside Online curriculum. It's totally free, has parent forums and Facebook groups to help you out, and you only need to buy whatever books are called for. From about 3rd or 4th grade, my kids were reading Shakespeare, Plutarch, the classics. The curriculum isn't textbook based, which will be quite a change. However, it's also refreshing because the knowledge is at a deeper level than what textbooks provide.Locally, right on 1960, there's The Scholars Connection, a fairly new co-op. My kids went to classes there for a couple of years. The science teacher used to work for NASA and is a retired high school science teacher. One of the math teachers also teaches evening math classes at one of the Lone Stars. One of the English teachers was a curriculum coordinator for Spring ISD, I believe. The co-op has good teachers and a casual atmosphere. My son is taking an online chemistry class this year, and the teacher is excellent. There are numerous online homescool options. Last year, he took a semester class on Sports Medicine from a man who is a physical therapist. He loved the class so much he's taking Sports Medicine 2 in January. I wanted him to take an astronomy class from a retired Lietenant Colonel who now teaches online homeschool classes.For math, both kids used Teaching Textbooks that come with CD instruction. They've done very well and my daughter will be starting their Pre-Calc program in another couple of weeks.Here in town, there's an active sports organization, The Conquerors, who offer basketball and track. My kids go to a rowing club in The Woodlands, whose coaches are active in helping their rowers get recruited by colleges. One area baseball team, The Mustangs, regularly have boys recruited by colleges, and homeschool athletes can register with the NCAA.This doesn't work for every family, but then, public school doesn't necessarily work for every family, either. My daughter did well on her SAT and we'll start visiting colleges this year. Her #1 choice is a private college in Virginia. She has homeschooled friends attending Baylor, UT, University of Houston, HBU, etc. Military academies accept MANY homeschooled kids.Homeschooling will be DIFFERENT, no doubt about it, and as with anything in life, there will be trade-offs. For us, we've enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere, the flexibility, being able to choose curriculum that best works for our kids, since we know them better than any school teacher ever could.If I can help you learn more about your options, I'm happy to help. You can ask here, send me a DM, or we can even chat on the phone. I know the decision isn't one to make lightly. 4951

Is the thought of going to SCHS so horrible? I mean it's going to be different but it's a huge new school, and it will be split to keep each campus student body separate. 4951

@donnatella:  My guess is that this will be different for every household. Certainly the additional drive time will impact things like after-school jobs, maybe being at home for younger siblings. Who knows.

No, not at all, I think the information is just offered for those who probably were thinking about homeschool anyhow. I'm sure some are also looking into private school options.

It's just another solution to those who want options. Public school wasnt the only option befor the flood and it certainly isn't the only option now.

Texas Connections Academy is great, if they still have room. It is a free virtual/ online public school. They have teachers for each course, live lessons, follow the same curriculum and testing as other public schools here,counselors, principal, AP classes, honors classes,regular classes,and  field trips. I just want to put this info out there again because I have personal experience with them. It is a great resource for parents that work and have HS kids. The lessons are already in place and the teachers are there. Another one that is similar to TCA is K12.com. I hope this helps someone that is confused with all the options out there. 4951

Well then It's not an option for you. I agree it's not for EVERYONE but some have asked for options. This is one, a good one.

Kids move or relocate all the time and make friends, sometimes they keep old friends and make new. My daughter is still socialised with many of her public school friends AND has homeschool friends too. It's not a we vs them. Its just another legit way to educate your children.

@jpm:  Every family is going to have to make hard decisions. The Summer Creek option will probably work for most but not all.

@HollyHobby: so if you homeschool this year what would be required to enroll them back into KHS next school year?

@buddyboy: Not sure, but I do know that sometimes homeschooled kids enroll in public high school and vice versa.

@2danes: I was friends with a family who did a public school online academy and ended up not liking it. A certain number of desk hours were required, even if their kids finished assignments in less time.

For us, having extra time was the whole point of homeschooling. Without classroom discipline issues, teacher administrative tasks, and distractions of all kinds, kids can get schoolwork done in as lot less time.

Thank you for the info. I am unsure as to what to do, for a few reasons. I was actually considering homeschooling before Harvey swept through. I have much to think about.... 4951

@myevilgrin: I'm working with a lady who actually teaches people how to homeschool through high school, to offer a free class for Harvey families. When I have a date set, I'll post it here.

Unless it is online public school, like Texas Connections, they are not required to accept the credits

@HollyHobby:

My nephew came to live with me in his junior year of high school. He decided to homeschool as that is what my kids do. When he went back home and enrolled back into New Caney High they wouldn't accept any of his credits for the previous year so he just finished his last year with homeschool. 4951
