Do you think KHS will provide counseling to help kids who were affected by the flood. They may not need it, but to have it available would be great, even to help with the transition from one school to the next. 4951

If children need counseling, couldn't their parents pay for it?  Is everything on the shoulders of the tax payers? 4951

Not just for kids. We have such a negative social stigma as to counseling sometimes it eclipses such benefits.

I'm hoping that support groups will start popping up, if only to give flood victims a time and space to vent, cry, complain, etc. A lot of parents will not do that around their kids and really need a safe place to let all that out.  Emoticon 4951

My kids went thru 2 floods while they were small and now this while they are away. I had never considered counseling once. As a family unit we are strong and realistic. I can't imagine my kids needing anything other than the support they are given by friends and family.

Why don't you think these kids are strong enough to handle this? Is it good to teach them to get counseling every time they break a nail? I would much rather my kids learn to handle difficult situations now than be Prozac ridden adults who can't work things out for themselves later.

I know this sounds mean but I just don't get this whole counseling thing. To me it's no different than the safe spaces provided for the thumb suckers of the election.

Please raise your kids to be strong, independent adults who can stand tall on their own 2 feet. 4951

@TXtransplant:  Well said.  When an explosion at our refinery killed 5 people, one of whom was a good friend, our company offered counseling.  The explosion occured at about 5am.  Several office buildings were destroyed or significantly damaged, including mine.  If the explosion had happened a few hours later, hundreds of employees and contractors would have been killed/wounded, including me. Our boss told our dept that counseling was available "for those who needed that sort of thing". Because of that stigma, I didn't talk to a counselor and just buried it deep.  I then worked at a lubricants plant and our technical and research facility for about 8 years where I felt "safe".  Then I ended up back at a refinery, which brought back my memories, fears, and survivors guilt.  I finally went to a counselor, was diagnosed with PTSD and depression.  Just driving into the refinery was a trigger for me. Every fire or gas release put me in a near panic.  I ended up retiring earlier than planned and am now better able to deal with things because I am away from a refinery.

Any adult or child that was traumatized or highly stressed by the storm/flood should at least consider talking it out with a counselor to avoid long-term issues from "sucking it up" or burying it deep.  If I had dealt with my issues at the time, it would not have affected me as much. 4951

Some of the comments above are what stigmatizes mental health recovery. This has nothing to do with being "strong."  This has to do with realistically addressing the true needs of both children and adults who might be struggling and too ashamed to admit it.Do you not know that the survivors of storms share the classic symptoms of PTSD?Do you not know that depression and thoughts of suicide blossom in young impressionable minds that have had their entire lives upheaved? What cruelty and disregard for your fellow citizens. Shame on ya'll. 4951

I think there is a huge difference between a plant explosion and a natural disaster. I'm so sorry that happened to you. Survivors guilt is a very real thing and counseling can really help with that.

Now as for the high schoolers having to deal with a big change in schools and possibly a flooded house. With over 2700 students from the same community, all seeing this disaster as it played out, some losing home, some not and all being sent to SCHS, they're in it together, all of them are experiencing these tragedies together and they have each other. Let them figure this out with their peers. It's very likely that this is a wonderful opportunity for them to come together.

It will be a great story later in life and can make for interesting entrance exam papers for all the students from both schools.

Now if the parents will just get out of their way. 4951

Say what you want about counseling, I do not agree with pretending everything is well with me when it is not. Sometimes it takes another person to help you understand how you are feeling and why.To each his own, after a disaster of any kind there is nothing wrong with counseling, There is however something wrong with pretending 'I'm ok, you're ok" when we are not.If you are ok, that's good, don't try to make those who are not feel bad. 4951

Don't know what counseling will do for me I always walked away thinking it was a waste of time. I accept things the way they are and I can only change them.  4951

I have an ex SIL who pushed counseling on her daughter at 15 because the mom was to screwed up to have a healthy discussion with her herself. It was very dramatic and very confusing to my niece, who to this day is screwed up and heavily medicated. It was stupid.

Now thinking of myself as a teen, if my mom had suggested counseling to me because of a flood and change in school she would have been the butt of many jokes with my friends. I can't even picture that conversation with my kids "honey I know it's so hard to flood and I know you have to change schools, so I'm thinking you may need to talk to someone, not me or your dad, but a stranger who counsels". Really?

It wasn't a mass school shooting where kids really need serious help, it was a flood, a natural disaster, something that happens most everyday somewhere in the world.

It is sad, it can be confusing and some kids don't have the skills to cope with small problems, but I would hope that the majority of your kids can move along just fine.

Absolutely nothing wrong with counseling - make it available and if the kids want it it's there.

Those of you making negative comments about counseling are just perpetuating the stigma. I've been to a counselor several times in my life - it doesn't make me weak nor does it mean my parents didn't raise me to be strong. Quite the opposite. Many regulars were witnesses to a life event last year- they can testify to my strength. My issue will never go away until I die. As a friend in OH said to me just yesterday "you are the most resilient person I know- I've seen your son bring you to one knee but never both- I don't think anything can make you hit rock bottom." She wrote this because she was my contact for a calling tree for out of state friends. So she got all the gritty details of what we have gone through.
The reason I am strong is because of my faith in a higher power AND counseling.

Fine if you don't need it but done stigmatize it for others who might 4951
