After much experimentation, we have found that a combination of detergent, Lysol Laundry Deoderizer, Borax powder and vinegar works best to take out the smell. We are having to wash flood laundry at least a couple of times as well. 4951

I just used detergent and a cup of vinegar and then some dryer sheets. Smells pretty good thus far. 4951

Can you recommend something to get the smell out of your nose? Think I will remember the smell of these houses forever. 4951

Try sniffing some coffee beans ground coffee. That works to get rid of some horrible smells, I'm not sure about the flood water stench. Someone needs to try it and report back.

I've also heard that rubbing Vicks Vapor Rub under the nose helps with awful smells while you're being exposed to it. That's what coroners apparently do. 4951

@sammee:

Beans help to clean the senses but it's temporary.

Vicks, if you don't mind breathing mint works great and it stays put.

Regarding detergents TSP works great and is what we used to use to get odor out of fire turnout gear (smoke/mold/other). We would also clean our SCBA masks with it and wouldn't damage other organics such as the rubber face seal. Can be found next to the borax or better in any hardware store.

You do, however have to add it to soap as it's not a surfactant alone. Recipes can be had online.

@TXtransplant:

I don't know who "Tucker" is but this argument is true. TSP is phenomenal as a soap additive.

For odor.....better than borax.

There is nothing harder to wash out than fire smoke and this does it. As in like it never happened. 4951

Alyson concentrate in the brown bottle is what FEMA recommended after hurricane Rita hit us. I'm using it on friends clothing now. I'm using 1/4 cup then washing a second time in regular detergent so they don't smell so much like disinfectant. 4951
