We were informed that we qualify for temporary housing and to call a hotel from a list. I called the hotel and they said we need vouchers. I am so confused. Does anyone know how FEMA temporary housing assistance works?

Thanks! 4951

@Ghettoowl: Did FEMA provide a hotline? Seems like they would be the best source of answers.

@donnatella:
The hotline says they are experiencing a lot of calls, which I understand totally, and to refer to the website. The website says call one of the hotels on a list. The hotel says they need vouchers. So confusing!

On my paperwork, it lists the FEMA hotline as 800-621-FEMA. See if they can help you there.

My in-laws stayed in a hotel and when they were checking out the hotel had them fill out a form and money was deducted from their bill. 4951

Where did you find open rooms? I called several yesterday and they were booked up. 4951

@humblelady: they went to Hondo or something like that. Don't ask why. I have no idea.

It seems like every hotel I call is already booked up or they don't take FEMA Vouchers even though they're on the list. Can anybody give some advice? 4951

@sleepy454: Try looking out of the bubble. Atascocita, has a ton of pop-up places between the Fall Creek golf course and the airport, also along the BW in the other direction.

Also consider North Shore, Channelview, Baytown, Pasadena, Porter, New Caney, or go further north. 4951

Has anybody had any experience with finding a hotel closer to Houston? Maybe in Richmond, Austin, Centerville, Texas? 4951

During another potential storm, I booked a room in Dallas. It was easy to just get on the internet and call them up. Not sure you have to go that far this time, but they really are just a phone call and a credit card away.

Don't give up on the Atascocita/Humble area. There are several along 1960. They aren't luxury but we used the Holiday Inn Express (next to Spring Creek BBQ) when we moved recently. They were friendly, clean, very accommodating and serve a decent breakfast, during our few "homeless" days between homes. Again, not the Four Seasons but cozy, comfy and just right at the time. 4951
