You can laugh at the news about their predictions of the hurricane, but Houston is known to flood even with a little rain. Harris County won't spend the money to clean all the trash, trees, and brush out of the bayous and creeks. This is part of the reason for some of the flooding. 4951

@CC1974:

I agree it doesn't help but acres of concrete, minimal elevation change and big storms are the prime culprits. 4951

Yeah but Yankees build better cities, I conceded the name may or may not effect flooding. 4951

Because they chiseled the foundation out of granite, not built on swamp grass. 4951

But Mr. Brown gave us the drain tax to guarantee no more flooding.

Actually that is not true. There have been more problems with the cities (infrastructure, buildings, utilities) in northern cities. Specially the New England area.Some of it is due to the limited space and age of the cities, some of it due to the changing seasons.You just don't typically see as many problems in temperate climate cities.That, and the people are pretty much jerks in most cities in the north and specially on the left and right sides of the country. 4951

Cleaning the trash and things can help, but it won't when tides are high, as they often are during tropical storms.  There is nowhere for the water to go.  Also, Houston has flooded since it's been a city, (and probably for thousands of years before that) so no matter what technical innovations there are some flooding will still happen.  It is going to happen - we live in a wet, humid environment that gets a boat load of rain at times.  Houston was a swamp before being made a city. 4951
