Anyone ever done fulltime rving, not rv parks but boondocking and seeing the country? Trying to decide if we are crazy to try this for a couple of years to figure out where we want to put down roots.   4951

No, but traveled a lot camping (tent and popup trailer) and it's wonderful.

Two different couples I know, both retired and did the full time rv thing. Both said don't travel to much, limit to 4 to 6 hours travel at any one time.
Try to stay in one place for an extended time.
Hasn't heard either in over a year now. Might be a good thing, don't know
Both said getting rid of all their stuff was the hardest part.

@BooBear, we've had that discussion, lol.  I'm thinking we can do this, then I wake up in the middle of the night thinking "oh Sh*&"We've traveled a bit, but always rushing to a destination and hurrying to see everything to rush home.  He needs a break-in period to de-stressing and retirement, this may be it. Working non-stop since he was 18.I thought my mom would tell me it's insane, she's thought it was a great idea.  We just watched a couple of young (to me) people late 50 - mid 60's have their lives cut short by terrible unforeseen illness. ALS, cancer.  We feel like we saved the $$, why keep working for more $$ when we can just change it up. 4951

@MarT: Maybe try loading your vacation time with RV trips first. That way you can try it out without fully committing. The Hubs has family that did that and they are glorified homeless people, that just wander around the state in a old people homeless RV pack. They use their adult children as home base since they sold their own home to buy a $300,000+ RV.

I don't 100% buy the idea that they love it completely, and they show signs of seriously regretting giving up their home.

RVing is a wonderful hobby. Just make sure it's for you before going all in.

@donnatella,Our problem is we don't want to stay here, we have a handful of places we think we could retire to and a lot of the country we would like to visit, on our time.  I'm not hanging out in Walmart parking lots or RV parks, no way, no how.  There is an end in sight, we want a home, just not here, too friggin hot. My job doesn't afford me time off to explore where we want to live and the cost of living is too high to hang on to the house, leave it empty and travel....Harris County taxes.  Hubby has traveled so much the past 13 years, the idea of flying, hotels and restaurants in not a vacation to him   4951

My dad's cousin and her husband did this for quite a while and loved it. They were both well-off and retired. They made a lot of friends around the country as they traveled. At the time, they owned a very nice townhome in Scottsdale, and that was always their home base. I don't know if they had a housesitter while they traveled or if it remained empty. When I was a backpacker and traveled around the world, my path would cross those of other travelers and we'd exchange info about great places to go, where to eat, etc. and I'm sure the same is true of RV people. You might end up with a nice network of friends, going back each year to meet up at favorite places.  Emoticon 4951

MarT, if you don't want to live here, then you have nothing to lose if you don't like it. I think it would be a great journey. If you don't like it, you can always buy another house. Take it from me, you aren't promised tomorrow. You will always wish you would have tried it. I think you should do it. Life should always be an adventure. Do it while the two of you can. 4951

Actually, if you are not just humping it to a destination and not stressed about the trip, you would be surprised how nice it can be.

We bought a restored VW Eurovan Rialta last year.  We've taken a lot of local trips, some to parks and some to state and national parks.  We just returned from a 29 day, 6,500+ miles trip to the Pacific Northwest. It is 24 foot long so the interior is compact and efficient.  You learn that you can get by with the minimum kitchen gear and a small amount of clothing.  Living in that space with a 38 pound dog can, at times, be exasperating It is so tempting to shop for a larger unit for full time but there a many things to consider.Health care availability, closeness to family,  financial management.Frankly, in the long run it is cheaper to fly, rent a car and stay in a hotel.  4951
